| (Dog supplies are much cheaper via mail catalog or internet than pricey pet stores.) 1. You will need a brush and comb. There are different types for different types of hair. Perhaps a groomer, vet or an informed pet store owner can help you here. 2. Nail clippers. Get the scissors type. The guillotine type is not liked by most dogs because they squeeze the nail. 3. Doggy shampoo and rinse. Never use people shampoo. Dog fur and human hair have a different ph and what works on us is not good for them. 4. Water and food bowl. There are many types out there, but the best is stainless steel. It is unbreakable and is much easier to clean then plastic or crocks, which can harbor bacteria in cracks and crevices. 5. Crate for training and to sleep in, unless you let dog sleep with you, which all trainers say is a no-no that I politely ignore. 6. Toys. Youll need toys if your dog is a single child especially. Be careful what you buy. All toys are not safe. Rawhide is dangerous because dogs chew it off in chunks and swallow large pieces that can strangle them. Dont laugh, it happened to my friends Lhasa. Nylabone makes not only nylon bones, but make edible ones of chopped up rawhide, chicken & cheese, bacon, etc. My dogs love these. They are compressed until they are as hard as bone, so they last a while. Wal-Mart has them for a lot cheaper price than the pet stores. Squeaky toys can be dangerous if they have the kind of squeaker that is removable and not built into toy. Puppies can extract these and strangle. Beware of any toys that have small parts that are easy to chew off. Just like children, puppies dont always have the best sense. |
