| This is my sweet Ariel! She & Kiwi were both quite a surprise. I have always been a dog & cat person. I can no longer own cats because a member of my household is allergic. Who would've thought that parrots were so smart & so much like dogs & humans. Moreover, that you could love them equally as much? Ariel is my first BIG parrot. She is really only 9 inches long, but since little Kiwi is only 5 inches, she seemed huge to me. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| Ariel is a Brown Headed Poicephalus. They are small parrots from the Southeast coast of Africa and some of the islands off the coast. Of the Poicephalus family, which includes better known parrots such as the Meyers and the Senegal, the Brown Heads are the most conservatively colored, but they are also the sweetest of the group. The most endearing thing about them is their clownish behavior. Ariel rolls and wrestles with my hand and growls like a puppy! Imagine my surprise when she first did that! | |||||||||||||||||||||||

| I belong to a parrot club called Beak n Wings. We take our birds to different local festivals and try and educate the public regarding their proper care. This is Ariel at her first festival when she was about 6 mos. old. (She was hatched in September 2003.) She was very scared of the crowd and the noise at first and spent a good deal of the time on my head where she felt safe. Height is safety, if you are a bird. | |||||||||||||||||||||||

| Later in the day she calmed down enough to preen her feathers, which is a good sign! I am grateful to a fellow club member for taking this closeup of my little girl "combing her hair". | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| Ariel on her homemade t-stand eating a chew stick. We've graduated to a store-bought t-stand now. Someday, when Mom gets more money we are going to get a play stand. Whoopee! | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| Baby Ariel trying out her little clipped wings. At 9 mos. Mom is still waiting for them to grow back out so she can take a tour around the house by herself. Now I have to run down the hall with her on my raised hand yelling "Wheeeeeee, wheeeee! We're flying!" A bit silly, don't you think? |
