| Welcome to our final issue of the Pinecone Press!
This issue marks the end of our sixth year of continuous monthly publication. Thats quite a feat! However, your hardworking and faithful newsletter staff have decided to call it quits, at least for the foreseeable future. We want to thank our readers, our advertisers, our volunteer delivery team and those who have served on our editorial staff during these six long years. Weve seen many changes, with new people stepping in to replace folks who have left Pine Lakes to go to other homes (some to their eternal home). Your present editorial staff members are deeply involved in their community in many ways. They want to pursue other interests and fulfill other obligations. They will now have more time and energy to enter into new ventures. Weve had a great run during the past six years and developed many skills in the process. Our Pinecone Press Website will still be available online, as will our Blog. Theres a lot of history to view on the Website and some great stories on the Blog. We might even add to them occasionally as time goes by. |

| From the Desk of Ken Tolliver, Recreation Assn. President:
I've been involved in Recreation activities since we moved into Pine Lakes seven years ago. My observation over the years is that fewer residents have been attending the activities and volunteering to help. It is not that we have a lack of activities. The problem is lack of people. We have over 400 residents in this outstanding park, but we see only a fraction of the homeowners here at the activities. Why is that? We have a certain percentage of residents who typically participate in offered events. It's the other percentage we are trying to reach. What can I do to encourage your participation? I'm inviting you to attend the Recreation Association General Meeting, Friday, October 3rd in the Clubhouse at 1:00 p.m. Bring your suggestion, ideas and express your opinions. My objective as President is to have the residents of Pine Lake get involved with the activities. It takes more than just four people to plan and to organize these events. |

| The Magic of Motion, aka Exercise
by Chas Wical A balanced and well-planned exercise or fitness program is one of the wisest investments one can make. It is a high-yield investment, paying dividends in both the length and quality of life. Too few of us realize how vitally important exercise is to good health, our greatest earthly asset. For this good health, exercise is as important as fresh air, water, wholesome food, and rest. Some individuals excuse themselves from an exercise program with I just dont have time or Im too old. Regardless of how busy you are, schedule some time for exercise. Dismiss the old age excuse because it is never too late to utilize the magic of moving. A little exercise each day will keep us fit and make us more efficient and productive. The benefits are more than worth the small investment of our time and effort. Generally, after about age 50 we become less active and begin to deteriorate. Muscles shrink (because of less use), and our metabolic rate slows down. If our calorie intake is not reduced to match our decreased activity, excess calories consumed are stored as fat throughout the body. However, muscles actively used do counteract the effects of the aging process. What is the best exercise? Specifically, working the handle on the side of your Lazy Boy recliner or pushing the TV remote buttons do not qualify as exercise. Among people who participate in outdoor recreational activities, 64% choose walking as their preferred form of exercise which is perhaps the safest and best exercise for the majority of us. Swimming is a close second, followed by a multiplicity of other activities. Individuals with higher levels of fitness may choose more strenuous activity. However, for the beginner, start slowly with what you can do. How fast you go isnt the most important thing, but rather the distance covered and duration of the activity. How much exercise is recommended daily? It is variable. 30 minutes a day, three times a week may be an adequate minimum for a person of normal weight and a good level of fitness. People who are unfit or need to lose weight, need to aim higher--- with an exercise goal of an hour daily. Your exercise program can be gentle. Some individuals must start with only five minutes of exercise at a time, several times a day. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| You dont need to pump iron (weight lifting) or run marathons. If walking, just get yourself some comfortable walking shoes, step out the front door, and keep going for a lifetime! For an additional challenge, a walker can carry extra weights in their hands, wrists, waist, or ankles while walking.
One of the best things about walking is you dont have to do it alone. Walking with others encourages your own compliance, increases communication, and strengthens relationships. During these times, the miles just fly by. Choose an activity that you enjoy. This favors the success of your program. If you dislike a particular exercise program, choose another approach with an attitude of fun and creativity, such as golf (without the golf cart?), landscaping, gardening, etc. Swimming and water aerobics are excellent. Our Pine Lakes community has a walking group which meets Monday through Saturday for an hours walk along the old railroad grade, then looping back on a trail through the woods. Anyone is invited to join them. A hiker/walker can turn around at any point on the loop if a shorter walk is desired, or while endurance is being built up. Many park residents utilize the various roads within the park for their exercise programs. Excellent! Now, for an anecdotal example of what an exercise program can do for individuals who are past their prime read the following paragraph: Mavis Lindgren was quite sickly, spending most of her time sitting in her rocking chair and knitting. She recently endured four repeated bouts of pneumonia and was tired of taking the prescribed antibiotics and enduring their side-effects. She decided to follow the advice suggested by a friend who told her about the benefits of exercise. She began a gentle exercise program, gradually building her endurance, then advanced to a running program at age 62. She continued her training, and at age 70 ran her first marathon. At age 87, she completed famous marathons in New York, Los Angeles, Portland, and Ottawa! Her story has been featured in many sporting magazines. If you are not in an exercise program, why not begin? Why not put your best foot forward and take that next step to improve your health? |

| PLAMHO NEWS:
MINUTES OF THE SEPT. 9 GENERAL MEETING: The meeting was brought to order by President Betty DellaCorte at 7:01 pm. After leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance, Betty reviewed our rules of conduct for meetings. The Minutes of the previous General Meeting were read and approved. The Treasurers Report: 871.53 Balance at the end of June 130.00 Income 138.85 Expenses 862.68 Balance as of September 9 Membership Chair Marilyn McDill reported that we now have 100 households in membership. Annette Clift mentioned that, starting in October of each year, we begin accepting dues for the following calendar year. Bill Jones stated that the Grievance Committee does not have any unresolved grievances at present. OLD BUSINESS: Park Manager Vicky Franklin reported that the Corporate Office had accepted our request to make Pine Lakes a smoke-free community. An amendment to the Park Rules and Regulations will be forthcoming and will be announced to the residents. NEW BUSINESS: A Nominating Committee for finding candidates for the 2009 Board of Directors was appointed. The Committee consists of Bev Hardman and Al Carter, with Betty DellaCorte also serving as an ex-officio member, since she is currently President. Betty read a letter from AAMHO requesting donations to its Legal Fund, to fund legislation stopping underhanded tactics on the part of some park owners in forming corporations and then raising tenants rents by exorbitant amounts. Copies of this letter were sent to almost all PLAMHO members, but since a few didnt receive the letter, copies will be placed in the brochure rack beside the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Carol Patton and Wil Bloom asked why an HOA fee isnt billed to new residents along with their first months rent. Carole Urbanski answered that PLAMHO isnt an HOA. Membership in PLAMHO is voluntary. |
Wil Bloom spoke about the upcoming meeting on September 18 concerning future development in the Park, specifically the addition of about thirty new homes. Wil stated that several things in the Clubhouse need repair and improvement, especially the undersized stove which leaks gas and the inadequate electrical supply. These needs should be satisfied before new construction begins. Vicky stated that these concerns were listed by many residents on the comment sheets submitted after the previous future development meeting, on March 13, 2008. Both Elizabeth Allbright and Al Carter stressed that a list of residents concerns and needed repairs should be compiled and prioritized.
Al Carter was complimented and thanked by Thea Park, for organizing the seven-week Pine Lakes Olympics, which is benefiting residents health and social activity. PROGRAM: Dwight DEvelyn, Crime Prevention Coordinator for Yavapai County, gave us a talk and PowerPoint presentation about Identity Theft, and how to avoid it. Arizona leads the nation in cases of Identity Theft per capita. Reasons for this include illegal drug traffic across our border with Mexico. Dwight urged us to do several things: Empty your purse of unneeded credit cards. Dont let your credit card go out of your sight. Dont fall for sweepstakes or lottery offers in the mail. Shred pre-approved credit card offers. Use ATMs only in daytime and preferably inside banks. Be aware of your surroundings while using ATMs. Guard your Social Security number, and dont give it to anyone unless you trust them. Beware of scammers asking for your Social Security number. Zerox the contents of your wallet. Avoid Internet scams, especially e-mails pretending to be from banks, etc. asking for your account numbers. Use travelers checks when on vacations. The meeting adjourned at 8:33 pm. Submitted by Annette Clift, Secretary |

| A letter from Dee and Don Hams:
On Saturday, September 13, 2008, my husband and I attended a wonderful dinner of beef stroganoff, which was delicious, and a dessert of strawberry shortcake at our very own Pine Lakes Clubhouse. After dinner we were pleasantly entertained by two Pine Lakes ladies, Cheryl Byers and Shirley Reitsma, who kept us laughing with their side-splitting lines. It was a wonderful show! Chris Coburn was the producer and director. We are so fortunate to have so many talented people living in our park. My husband and I attend many Prescott Fine Arts productions, knowing that all the performers are amateurs, and that they receive no money for their time spent rehearsing or for the actual shows. They do it for the love of performing, just like our amateurs in Pine Lakes who want to entertain you. Believe me, both gals could walk on the PFAA stage anytime a play came along that suited their fancy. My point is, we never hesitate paying from $12 to $18 a ticket for only a single show at PFAA. So WHY would anyone in this park "bad mouth" a $9 ticket for a wonderful dinner and show ??? It's their loss for not attending !!!!! |

| Just Imagine  Turning 80 on 08-08-08!
Thats what happened to Ruth Grenier, a relatively new resident in our Park. Ruth sends a message of thanks to all her friends in Pine Lakes: Our Move to Pine Lakes After the death of my husband of nearly 60 years, my son and I moved to Pine Lakes. Ray Junior purchased our home in April, 2007, at 119 Briar Street. He and I moved here from a golf course in Dayton, NV. We met many good friends here. On the opening day of the Olympics, 08-08-08, I celebrated my 80th birthday and was honored at a lovely dinner party given by my brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Sue Beyea, at their home on Mount Vernon Street. Fifty-nine guests friends old and new, neighbors and relatives, attended the gala affair. Many came from out of town and out of state. A great time was had by all. We are so very happy to have moved to Pine Lakes and to be near good friends and family. |
