He took her to the place where they had their first date: the gazebo. It was decorated with candlelight and roses. She wondered what they were doing here. Before she knew it, he was down on one knee, asking her to marry him. Of course she said yes; she loved him very, very much. That was the beginning of this whole story....
Casey Mitchum sat down at his desk after a day of watching the beach. He sighed. How did my life come to such a bad time?, he thought, after he spotted the picture on his desk. It was of him and his wife, Sara, on their wedding day. She was the best thing that ever happened to him in his life.
"Oh, Sara, I wish you'd wake up so I could hold you again," he said to the picture. In the picture they looked happy, as happy as two people could be. He thought back to that wonderful day.
He looked to the vestibule. The doors were closed, but he knew behind those doors was the woman of his dreams. When the doors opened, he gasped. A vision of white appeared. Before he knew it, she was standing in front of him, her eyes glistening. He made a promise to her. A promise to love, honor and cherish her, for the rest of their lives. She promised him the same. In a flash, they were married. And they were as happy as anyone could ever be. After the ceremony, the newlyweds were driven to their reception. There, they shared their first dance as husband and wife.
*All I am, all I'll be; everything in this world,
all that I'll ever need is in your eyes, shining at me
When you smile I can feel all my passion unfolding
Your hand brushes mine, and a thousand sensations
seduce me 'cause
I do cherish you for the rest of my life,
you don't have to think twice
I will love you still from the depths of my soul
It's beyond my control
I've waited so long to say this to you:
If you're asking, 'Do I love you this much?', I do.*
Casey kissed his wife on her forehead. "Sara, I can't believe this. Today has been the best day of my life so far. Other than the day I realized you were the one."
Sara smiled, her beautiful smile dazzling her husband. "I am so lucky to have gotten you for a husband. I love you so much, Mr. Mitchum." She looked up at Casey, her eyes glistening.
"I love you too, Mrs. Mitchum." They smiled and kept on dancing.
*In my world, before you, lived outside my emotions,
didn't know where I was going 'til that day I found you
How you opened my life to a new paradise
In a world torn by change,
still with all my heart, to my dying day
I cherish you, my baby; this much I know is true
for the rest of my life, you don't have to think twice
I will always love you, baby; this much I promise you
from the depths of my soul it's beyond my control
I've waited so long to say this to you:
If you're asking, 'Do I love you this much?', baby, I do...*
After the dance, and the cake, and everything else, Sara's sister, Meg Evans, spoke up. "I would like to propose a toast. This is for my sister, Sara, and my new brother, Casey. I wish you happiness, the best kind there is. I wish you love, the strongest there is. And I wish you sanity, because God knows things can get crazy in a marriage." Everyone laughed. "But seriously, I wish you two everything that you could possibly have. I wish you a blessed life, and I wish that you two will always have each other. I wish you to be together forever."
"Together forever," Casey said to himself. "That's all I want."
"Hey, Casey." He looked up. His friend Michael Bourne was standing there.
"Oh, hi, Mike."
"How are you holding up?"
"I'm alright."
"You sure? Has she woken up yet?"
"No."
"Well, Vanessa and I are praying for her every day, okay? We're all rooting for Sara."
"Thanks, man. You don't know how much I appreciate it."
"No prob. Hey, if you need anything, I'm right here."
"I know, Michael. Listen, I'm going to the hospital, to visit Sara. If anyone's looking for me, tell them I'm there, okay?"
"Sure, Casey."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Sara was lying in her bed. Signs of life were visible; no one saw them, though. She knew she had to wake up one day, for Casey. But she couldn't bear to see him if their baby had died. She had no idea if her baby was still alive, or if it had died. She had a memory flash, of the day she found out the great news.
Sara and Casey were walking down the beach. Suddenly, Sara fainted, and Casey caught her. "Sara, are you okay?"
"Yeah. I just... I got a little dizzy." Casey helped her up.
"Are you sure? That's the third time in two days. Maybe you should get checked out."
"No, Casey, I'm fine."
"I still think you should get checked out, Sara."
"Okay, if it makes you feel better."
"I'm fine if I know you're alright." He kissed his wife.
"Are you coming?"
"Yeah--" The sound of his beeper cut him off. "Damn. Listen, Sara, they're paging me at Lifeguard HQ. I have to go."
"It's okay, Casey."
"You sure?"
"Of course. They're probably going to send out search parties if you don't go now. Come on, get going."
"Okay, okay." Casey started to leave, but he turned. "Sara?"
"Yeah?"
"I love you."
Sara smiled. "I love you too, Casey." They kissed goodbye and Casey left.
*******************************************************
"Well, Sara, what's up?"
"Um... My husband told me I should get checked out, because I've fainted three times in two days."
"Really. Are you ill or anything?"
"No! I'm fine. It just suddenly happens."
"Okay, has anything else unusual been going on?"
"Well, sometimes, I feel suddenly nauseous, and I get weird cravings."
"Uh-huh."
The doctor scribbled some stuff on her clipboard. "Well, we're going to run some tests, and when the results come back, we'll tell you what's going on, okay?"
"Okay. Can I leave?"
"Oh, no. It'll be just a few minutes, I promise."
"Okay, Dr...."
"Chang. Dr. Rae Chang."
"Thanks." Dr. Chang left. Rae... Rae.... Sara knew she'd heard that name before. But where? She shook off that thought.
*****************************************************
Soon the tests came back. "Sara," the doctor began, "we know what's happening to you. And I think you'll be surprised."
"What? Am I okay?"
"Oh, yeah. You're fine. Except..."
"What?"
"Sara, did it ever occur to you that you could be pregnant?"
She sat, frozen, for a second. "What? Are you saying..?"
"Yes, Sara. You're pregnant. About three months along."
"Oh, my God." She gasped. "Wow."
"Congratulations. You can go now, but I want to see you here in a month, okay?"
"You got it." She got up to leave. "Thank you, Dr. Chang."
"Anytime." She smiled, and Sara left. After she left, Rae looked at Sara's records. That's when she saw her last name: Mitchum.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Sara walked to her shop, Sunset Sisters. She ran in and found Meg. "Meg!"
"Sara." Meg turned. "Oh, my gosh, you scared me. What's up?"
"I have the greatest news."
"What is it?"
Sara thought for a minute. Should I tell her or Casey first? She was debating over it when Casey walked in.
"Hey, beautiful."
Sara snapped out of it. "Oh, hi, Casey!" He wrapped his arms around her. "Sara, what's up? You weren't this happy when I left you."
Meg said, "Well, she said she has good news, Casey."
"Oh, really?"
Sara nodded. "You guys won't believe this."
"What is it? Just tell us already!"
"Okay, okay. Um...." she hesitated for a moment, "I'm pregnant."
"What? Oh, my God! Come here!" Casey picked up his wife and swung her around. She was laughing. He set her down and kissed her. "I can't believe this. Are you sure?"
"Positive."
"You guys, that's great." Meg hugged her sister and brother-in-law, also her best friend. "Sara, how many months along are you?"
"About three."
"Sara, this is great. We're going to have our own little baby."
"I know." They were both smiling.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Rae Chang was working at the hospital, attending to her patient, Sara Mitchum. She hated Sara. Hated her. For you see, Sara had stolen Rae's boyfriend. They had broken up, of course, but by the time Rae came back to Sunset Beach, Casey was already married-to Sara.
She entered Sara's room. "Hello, Sara." Sara was lying in her bed, comatose. She'd been this way for the past five months now. Her breathing was fine, she was doing pretty well, but she just didn't wake up. The other doctors thought she had a chance of waking up any day now.
Rae didn't want to think about it. Even though she hated Sara, she didn't let that stand in the way of her work. She knew it was going to ruin her reputation, and for Rae, that was that last thing she wanted. Besides, she never knew Sara. All she knew was that she was Casey's wife.
She'd heard the story of how Sara had come to be this way, from two witnesses, Cole and Caitlin Deschanel.
Cole and Caitlin were taking a walk to the park. It had been a few days since Cole's return, and the happy couple was hand in hand, savoring each moment. All of a sudden, they saw a speeding car. "What the...?"
"Cole, I think that car's going to hurt somebody. Write down the license plate number."
So they memorized the number: 4RDI817. They kept walking, when they heard a loud, loud crash.
"Oh, my God, Cole, what was that?"
"I don't know, but I'm going to check it out."
Cole and Caitlin ran to the crash site. Cole noticed out of the corner of his eye the car that had been speeding, fleeing the scene. He knew that car was responsible for this tragedy. But... was it just an accident?
"Cole, Sara's in the car. And she's bleeding."
"Sara?"
"Sara Mitchum. Casey's wife?"
"Oh, yeah, yeah. Listen, call an ambulance, Cait. She looks pretty bad. And page Casey."
Caitlin did as she was told, while Cole tried to get Sara out of the car. "Sara, it's Cole Deschanel. Can you hear me?"
"Cole... help me.... please."
"That's what we're doing. The ambulance is on its way."
"Casey... where's Casey..."
"Casey's on his way, Sara. Listen to me. You've got to calm down."
"But... my baby.... Please, God, don't let anything happen to my baby..."
"Cait?"
"Yeah, Cole?"
"Is Sara pregnant?"
"Yeah, Cole, didn't you hear? Casey told me."
"Oh, my God, Cait, why didn't you tell me that earlier? She's in more danger."
"Cole, I'm sorry."
"It's okay. Oh, the ambulance is here."
The paramedics pulled Sara from the wreckage. "Casey... where's Casey...."
"Sara, he's right here."
Casey rushed to Sara. He saw the blood flowing from a wound on her head. "Oh, my God, what happened?"
"The car.... it hit me."
"What car?"
Cole cut in. "Was it light blue? And speeding?"
"Yeah.... they hit me on purpose...."
"What?"
"Come on, let's get her in the ambulance."
"Casey?" Sara's voice was hardly a whisper.
"Yeah, Sara?"
"I love you. And if anything happens to me, if I don't make it, I want you to remember that. Please don't let anything happen to our baby. Promise me."
"I promise. I love you too, Sara." He kissed her, and then, Sara went unconscious.
"Please, God, don't let anything happen to Sara. Or the baby. Please."
That was five months ago, Casey thought. And she's still lying there, unconscious. He made it to the hospital. Casey went into Sara's room, and Meg was there.
"...Sara, please, don't give up. You've got to wake up soon, or else they'll take your baby away."
"Meg?" She turned. "Oh, hi, Casey."
"What were you saying about the doctors taking the baby away?"
"Well, you know it's about her due date now, right?"
"Yeah..."
"Well, if she doesn't wake up before that, then they're going to perform an emergency C-section on her."
"No. I won't let them."
"Casey--"
"Meg, it's too dangerous. The baby could die. Sara could die. Or worse, they both could die. You don't want that, right?"
"Of course not, but Casey, if they don't, the baby might die anyway. It's a miracle the baby's still alive, after what Sara went through."
"I guess you're right. We'll see what happens."
"Okay."
Casey and Meg stood there, watching Sara. She could sense them there. She tried, desperately, to open her eyes, but for some reason, they wouldn't. Sara tried to make a sign, any sign that she knew they were there, but her body would not cooperate. Come on, she thought, I can do this.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Rae had taken the day off, and she went to the Java Web to get a cup of coffee. There was a woman there, who had a handful but couldn't carry it. The woman had one wooden leg. She dropped one of her packages, and Rae picked it up.
"Thank you."
"You're very welcome. Do you want to sit down?"
"Sure." Rae and the woman sat down. "So, are you new here in Sunset Beach?" Rae asked.
"Kinda sorta but not really. I've been here before."
"Really. You are...?"
"Melinda. Melinda Fall."
"Rae Chang."
"So, Rae, what brings you here to Sunset Beach?"
"Well, it's a long story. I knew a guy here, and we had a relationship, but I was to marry my betrothed up in San Francisco. Well, I did, but he died recently. So I came back here. But, my ex-boyfriend is now married."
"Ooh. Tough."
"Yeah. And to make things worse, his wife is my patient."
"Patient?"
"Uh-huh. I'm a doctor."
"Well, Dr. Chang, tell me. Is this patient of yours hard to deal with?"
"Oh, no. You see, she's in a coma. It's tempting, though. I could take advantage of that... and possibly kill her."
"What's her name?"
"I'm not qualified to give out information like that."
"It wouldn't be.... Sara, would it?"
Rae gasped. "How do you know?"
"I have my ways. You know why she's in a coma?"
"Yeah."
"I did it." Melinda grinned wickedly.
"You... you were in the light blue car?"
Melinda nodded. "Too bad it didn't kill her. It would have been great to rid the world of Sara Cummings."
"Sara Mitchum."
"What? She changed her last name?"
"She got married."
"To that lifeguard guy?"
"Casey?"
"Yeah, that's it. Dang, she knows how to get men in bed with her."
"Why do you want Sara dead?"
"She ruined my life. See this?" Melinda pointed to her leg. "That's why."
"She did that?"
"Uh-huh."
"Well, it would be nice to be rid of Sara..." Rae began.
"So, why don't we work together? You help me get rid of Sara, and I'll hook you up with Casey. Works both ways."
"I see..."
"Do we have a deal?"
Rae thought for a minute. "You got it." They shook hands.
**************************************************
Later that day, Rae was walking towards her "office" of sorts. A man was rushing and didn't see her; he bumped into her.
"I'm sorry," he said.
"You should be more careful," Rae said.
"Yeah, I know. But I'm in a hurry. You see, I have a case that I'm about to break. And I need to go to the police station."
"Oh, okay. Yeah, I'm in a hurry, too."
"Many people are going to be affected by this case."
"Well, what is it about?"
"A long story. The local millionaire? Ben Evans? Do you know him?"
"Yeah, sort of."
"Well, his psycho evil twin brother took over his life, in an attempt to take over his money, and tried to kill everyone close. Well, Ben killed his brother, and his brother's girlfriend is in jail."
"So?"
"Well, we just got news that her sister was involved. And we've been trying to find the girlfriend's sister."
"Well, what's her name?"
"We don't know. See, we think she tried to kill someone, too. Sara Mitchum. Know her?"
"Yeah, she's my patient."
The man looked at her curiously. "I'm a doctor," she explained.
"Oh. Well, you know what happened, right?"
"Yeah."
"We think she was in the car."
"Who, the girlfriend's sister?"
"Yeah. It would mean a lot to find her and arrest her. Because Sara is a friend of mine."
"Well" Rae began, "first of all, I'm Rae Chang."
"Jude Cavanaugh."
"And, I know about this woman. She's got one wooden leg, right?"
"Yeah. Do you have a name?"
"Yes."
"What is it?"
Rae hesitated for a moment. "Um"
"Rae, if you could tell us, that would be great." Should I? I mean, she's your ticket to getting rid of Sara. But still, Casey isn't worth my rep.
"Melinda Fall."
"What?"
"That's the woman with the wooden leg."
"Rae, thank you so much. We're going to credit you for that. Come with me. We're going to arrest her." They started to leave, but Rae's beeper went off. "Oh, I'm sorry," Rae said. "I have a patient to attend to. But later, I'll come with you, okay?"
"Sure. Thank you again, Rae."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Rachel and Nicole Cummings ran to the receptionist. "Can you please tell us what room Sara Cummings is in?"
"Sara Cummings? We don't have a Sara Cummings here."
The twins looked at each other. "Didn't she get married, Rach?" Nicole asked.
"Yeah, yeah. Thing. What's her last name?"
"I don't know. It starts with an M... Miller?"
"No. Excuse me, ma'am," Rachel said, "do you know a Casey?"
"Casey Mitchum?"
"There you go! Do you know where his wife is?"
"Room 417."
"Thank you so much!" And they ran towards her room.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Melinda was on the way to her hotel room when Jude cornered her. "Melinda Fall, you're under arrest," he said, and started to handcuff her.
"But what? Why?" she asked, innocently.
"You know why," Jude said.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Knock, knock!
Casey and Meg turned to the door. The door opened, and Nicole and Rachel stood there.
"Rachel? Nicole? Oh, my God. Come here, you two!" Meg rushed to hug her little sisters.
"Meg, hi. We've missed you so much. And Mom, Dad and Sara. How is she?"
"Still unconscious. But listen. I thought you guys were back in New York, recording for your new album."
"Yeah, but nothing beats family. And Sara's our family. We're not turning our backs on her."
Casey smiled. "So, Meg, I have two sisters-in-law that you don't tell me about?"
"Oh! Sorry, guys. Nicole, Rachel, this is Casey, Sara's husband. Casey, this is Rachel, and this is Nicole."
"Well, I see that good looks run in the family. The women, anyway."
Nicole laughed. "Thank you, Casey."
The four of them stood there, not knowing what to say. Then Rachel broke the silence. "We came here to sing a song for our sister."
"Casey, did I mention my little twin sisters are up-and-coming singers?"
"No, but I guess I know now, huh, Meg?" They laughed.
"Anyway, we hope that this song will keep the faith, Casey. We know how hard this has been on you, especially." Nicole took out a CD, and placed it in a CD player on the counter. She began to sing.
*Many nights we've prayed with no proof anyone could hear
In our hearts a hopeful song we barely understood
Now we are not afraid, although we know there's much to fear
We were moving mountains long before we knew we could
There can be miracles when you believe
Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill
Who knows what miracles you can achieve?
When you believe, somehow you will
You will when you believe...*
Sara heard her little sisters singing to her. Come on, you can do it. She kept trying as Rachel began to sing.
*In this time of fear, when prayer so often proved in vain
Hope seemed like the summer birds; too swiftly flown away
Yet now I'm standing here, with heart so full, I can't explain
Seeking faith and speaking words I never thought I'd say...
There can be miracles when you believe
Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill
Who knows what miracles you can achieve
When you believe, somehow you will
You will when you believe...*
Sara's eyes began to flicker. Just a little bit more, and you'll be able to see them. She tried harder.
*They don't always happen when you ask
and it's easy to give in to your fears
But when you're blinded by your pain
can't see your way to get through the rain
a small but still resilient voice says love is very near
There can be miracles when you believe
Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill
Who knows what miracles you can achieve
When you believe, somehow you will
You will when you believe...
You will when you believe*
Sara's eyes finally opened. "Casey?" she asked, weakly.
Casey turned. "Sara?" He rushed to her side. "Oh, my God, Sara, I've been so worried." He hugged her.
"I know, Casey. I know how worried you've been. For a while, I've sensed you and Meg here. I could actually hear you. But I couldn't move."
"So why did you move now?"
"Because I heard my sisters singing, and I knew I had to do it. For you, and for them. I tried my very hardest."
"Sara, I'm so happy you're alive."
"Me, too." She kissed her husband and then smiled. "Hey, guys, thanks for the song. And the visit. I haven't seen you two in ages."
"We missed you, Sara," Nicole said.
"We needed to come see you," Rachel added.
"Well, it was just what I needed. Meg, hey. How have you been holding up?"
"I was a wreck, Sara. Until you came to. We have to tell Mom and Dad, now."
"Okay." Sara reached for the phone. Right before she picked the receiver up, she winced, and cried out in pain. "Meg," she said, "go get a doctor. Now."
"Sara, what's wrong?" she asked, alarmed.
"Just go. Hurry."
"But"
"Please. For me." Meg obeyed and went to find Rae. Casey rushed to his wife's side and took her hand. Rachel and Nicole were right behind him. "Sara, are you okay?"
"No. I... I think I'm going to have my baby."
"But..."
Rae barged in, followed by Meg. "Sara, you're awake?"
"Yes, and I'm going to have my baby. I can feel it." Sara winced again.
"You're in no position to give birth." She took out her walkie-talkie and paged doctors.
"What are you going to do?"
"We're going to give you a C-section."
"But..."
"No buts. I need everyone out of the room."
"Please, Doctor, could Casey stay?"
"Okay. But I need everyone else out. You can wait in the waiting area."
Rachel, Nicole and Meg filed out of the room. The other doctors came in, and gave Sara her anesthetic. Her world became black once again.~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
As soon as Rae was done with the surgery, Rae left the hospital. She went to the police station, where she found Melinda in custody. When Melinda saw Rae, she said, "You b-"
"Melinda, I'm sorry. I had no choice."
"Well, why didn't you bluff or something? You wanted Sara dead as much as I did."
"Wanted. Not anymore. Now I know that he loves his wife, and even I can't come in the way of their relationship."
"Oh, cut with the crap, Rae. I thought you were better than that."
"Melinda, I have one word for you: evil." Rae turned and left.
"Melinda?" a voice asked. Melinda turned and gasped.
"Tess? Wow, little sis, I didn't expect to see you here."
"I got caught. Those stupid people took away my happiness. And my son."
"You mean my nephew is in some foster home?"
"No. He's with Maria." Tess grimaced.
"Oh. That's great. Just great. We go for our dreams and we end up in jail."
"But Melinda, at least we're here together. I'm so glad I have my big sister to spend the rest of my life with." And they smiled.~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
After a while, Sara woke up. They were pulling her baby out. She heard her baby cry, and thanked God for letting her baby survive. "Congratulations, it's a girl." The tears fell from Sara's eyes. Casey saw them. "Hey, it's okay."
"I know. I'm just so thankful that she survived." After the rest of the surgery was over, a nurse handed Sara her little girl. "Oh, hello, precious." She looked down at her daughter's face, and could have sworn she saw a smile. "Look, Casey, our little girl."
"I know, Sara. She's beautiful, Sara. Just like her mother."
Sara smiled. "Do you want to hold her?"
"Okay." Casey picked up his daughter. "Hey, there, little girl. Oh, God, you are so precious. You know, you almost didn't make it. I love you so much." He kissed her on her little forehead and placed his finger in her hand. That minute-old hand grasped on to her dad's finger like there was no tomorrow."Wow, she's got a pretty good grasp. But anyway, Sara, we need a name."
"For her?"
"Yeah."
Sara thought for two seconds, and then she knew. "Faith."
"Faith?"
"Yeah."
"Why Faith?"
"Because without faith, she wouldn't be here."
Casey nodded. He looked down at his daughter. "Welcome to the world, Faith," he whispered. He gently let go and handed Faith to Sara. "Hi again, Faith. You know what? We love you. And we're always going to be here for you, no matter what."
Casey thought of something. "Sara, I'll be right back."
"Okay." He left, and came back with his sisters-in-law. "How are my girls?"
"Hi, guys. Look." Sara showed her daughter to her sisters.
"Oh, Sara, she's beautiful. I can't believe she survived!"
"I know. I am so blessed. Here, come see your niece, Faith." Sara handed Faith to Meg. The threesome gathered around her.
"Hi, Faith. These are your aunts, Rachel, Nicole, and me, Meg. Welcome to the world, little girl."
Rachel began to sing, very softly. "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear Faith, happy birthday to you." She kissed her niece and smiled. Everyone did.
**************************************************
A few months later, Casey, Sara, and their little girl exited the hospital. Faith had just been tested, and the doctors found no life-threatening conditions.
"Oh, my gosh, Casey, I can't believe it." Sara was smiling from ear to ear.
"I can't either. I think God let us keep her for a reason, Sara."
"Why?"
"Because now, we'll be together. Forever." And he kissed his two girls.
