6. KT Coporation.
Listed on the Korea and New York stock exchanges, KT
Corporation (KT) was the state-owned telecom monopoly in Korea, and is still
the principal operator in the country, providing telephone services, data
communications, Internet and satellite services. Mobile telephone services are
provided through KT’s subsidiary KT Freetel, which absorbed competing mobile
operator Hansol M.com in May 2001. The company’s name was changed from Korea
Telecom Corp to KT Corporation in March 2002. It was fully privatised in May
2002, when the government sold its last 28% holding. The 15% limitation on
individual shareholding was lifted in August 2002, and the aggregate foreign
ownership limit was raised to 49%.

Telecom
Listed on the Korea, New York and London stock exchanges, SK
Telecom (SKT) is controlled by the SK Group, the fifth largest company in
Korea. SKT is the number one wireless telecommunications provider in the
country. It introduced mobile telephony to the country in 1984. It was the
first in the world to commercialise CDMA in 1996. In January 2002, it launched
the world’s first cdma2000 1x EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimised) service,
allowing wireless data transmission at speeds of 2.4Mb/s. In 2000-2001, SKT
acquired a majority interest in rival CDMA operator Shinsegi Telecom, which was
merged into SKT in January 2002.

Instant messaging is very popular in Hong Kong and Singapore, with 66.8 per
cent and 54.5 per cent of internet users making use of the protocol in the two
cities respectively. Users in Korea are most interested in audio-video and file
transfers applications, while the Mail function is most commonly used in
Taiwan.
