Space Videos
Launch of STS-121
This a home video showing the launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery for mission STS-121 in July, 2006. The news video that you see does not give you an accurate idea of how a launch actually sounds, and how loud it can be. A home video can give you a realistic idea. Keep in mind too that these people are about six miles away from the launchpad. If it is this loud at that distance, imagine how loud it is up close.
Launch of STS-116
This is a home video showing the launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery for mission STS-116 in December, 2006. This launch was at night. I've seen a night launch of the shuttle in person, and I can tell you it is very, very bright.
Launch of STS-115
This is a video of the launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis for mission STS-115 in September, 2006. This is video taken by a camera mounted on one of the solid rocket boosters, which are attached to the external fuel tank (that is the big brown thing on the back of the shuttle). The video shows the view from launch, then booster seperation, and then splashdown in the Atlantic.
Launch of STS-65
This is a video of the launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia for mission STS-65 in July 1994. This video shows the view of the launch from inside the crew cabin of the orbiter. This is what the astronaut sees from the time of launch until they reach orbit.
Launch of Apollo 11
The launch of Apollo 11 in July 1969. Apollo 11 was the first lunar landing mission to the Moon. The Saturn V rocket shown here was the most powerful rocket ever launched with over 7.5 million pounds of thrust at lift-off. That is equal to 160,000,000 horsepower.
History Videos
Star-Spangled Banner
In the first few days after the September 11 attacks, the "Star Spangled Banner" was played during the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace in London. This was the first time ever that a national anthem other than that of the United Kingdom was played during the changing of the guard.
Russian National Anthem
This is the Russian National Anthem being played during the V-E Day celebrations in Moscow. I like this video because I think the Russian (and also former Soviet) National Anthems sound very cool. V-E Day stands for "Victory in Europe" which marked the surrender of Nazi Germany during World War II. The Russians suffered over twenty million dead in the war against Germany, so this celebration is a big deal to them.
Charge of the 20th Maine
This is a video taken from the movie "Gettysburg." During the battle, the 20th Maine Regiment was charged with holding one of the Federal flanks. They faced charge after charge by the Confederates, suffering heavy casualties and running out of ammunition. The 20th Maine made one last desperate charge, pushing the Confederates back and holding the flank. The regiment's commander, Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, received the Medal of Honor for leading the charge. Though I tend to favor the Confederates, this was one helluva piece of soldering made by Col. Chamberlain and the 20th Maine, and deserves respect.
Pickett's Charge, Part I
Pickett's Charge, Part II
Pickett's Charge, Part III
Pickett's Charge, Part IV
More videos taken from the movie "Gettysburg." This shows the charge made by the Confederates under the command of General George Pickett. The charge is known as the "high mark" of the Confederate States. Had the charge been successful, the C.S.A. would have won the Battle of Gettysburg, and probably the Civil War. Instead, Gen. Pickett's men were decimated, and the war was lost for the Southern cause. I had a relative; a distant cousin; who participated in and survived Pickett's charge as a soldier in the 7th Louisiana Infantry.
