A-G
ATP-adenosine triphosphate; an adenosine-derived nucleotide that supplies large amounts of energy to cells for various celluar reactions.
Carbon cycle-the movement of carbon, in its many forms, between the biosphere, atmosphere, geosphere, and oceans.
Carbon dioxide-a substance, along with water, that plants break down to make glucose
Chlorophyll-a green substance in plants that absorb sunlight and convert it to different forms of energy, such as ATP.
Chloroplasts-organelles in plant cells that make chlorophyll
Dark reaction-the second stage of photosynthesis, not requiring light to occur, and during which energy released from ATP drives the production of organic molecules, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen.
Glucose-see sugar
Guard cells-control the stomatal openings in the epidermis of the leaf.
H-R
Leaves-absorb light and is where chlorophyll is produced.
Light energy-energy that's absorbed by a plant for photosynthesis to occur
Light reaction-the first stage of photosynthesis, occuring only in the prescence of light, during which energy captured from light drives the production of ATP.
Lower epidermis-the outermost layer of cells covering the bottom of the leaves and young parts of a plant
Palisade cells-vertically elongated cells, such as seen beneath the epidermis of the upper surface of many leaves and absorb light
Pigments-a substance, such as chlorophyll, that produces a character color in plant or animal tissue.
S-Z
Spongy cells-the air spaces between spongy cells allow gas exchange
Starch-end product of photosynthesis and energy that's used by plants
Stoma-one of the small pores in the epidermis of a leaf or stem through which water vapor and gases pass
Sugar/glucose-initial product of photosynthesis
Upper epidermis-the outermost layer of cells covering the top of the leaves and young parts of a plant
Water-a substance, along with carbon dioxide, that plants break down to make glucose
