#0122 - Family Ties

Overview
Just as the crew have their way out of the asteroids and away from the Peacekeepers, Rygel decides to surrender himself to Crais and Scorpius. However, Crais is being dishonoured by Scorpius, who has all but taken over his command, and wishes to go with Rygel to Moya to escape his inevitable execution. With the newly-expanded crew of Moya formulating plans to escape the Peacekeepers, they begin to wonder if they will see each other again.

What I thought
A class episode. Huge amounts of character interaction that are impossible to list. Every character does what you'd expect, and usually what you wouldn't. Rygel trying to defect to the Peacekeepers and then coming back, for instance, and Chiana's "let's thank Crichton by trying to frell him" and then making everyone a feast, are such testaments. And then there's Crais, who does what you expect, even though you don't see it coming. Everything is well orchestrated, from the camera work and the fading around during the feast, to the CG (oh lovely CG, we praise you!) - probably the only dodgy bit is Zhaan's experiment exploding. There is great acting here and emotions are played with, and there is a great sense of finality around the cliffhanger - it's not so much a cliffhanger as the others are, more an end to the season and, if the show had ended there, a good way to finish the whole shebang. There's little gun play here though, nor little "who can/can't be trusted", but they wouldn't work anyway. There IS though perhaps the tensest bit of Farscape action yet at the end, as John and D'Argo implement their plan to blow up the Gammak base, Moya, Rygel, Chiana, Pilot and Zhaan prepare to escape, Aeryn gets ready to pick up John and D'Argo, and Crais kidnaps Talyn, all at the same time! More emotions are played with, especially with Aeryn, as she and John refuse to say goodbye, Aeryn gets more maternal with Talyn and shows Crais, and gets moody for not going on the suicide run. Oh, and there's Crichton's great lines when recording his message to Jack. Definitely one of the best, with hardly any minor flaws apart from that I've watched this too many times I know most of it off by heart. "This is John Crichton, somewhere in the universe...". 5 out of 5.
