Ilton, Somerset World War 2 Pillboxes and Anti-Invasion Defences.

West of Ilton, below the railway embankment on the site of the old Ilton Halt (Chard to Taunton Railway), a double-decker concrete pillbox, based on type 22 design still stands. Projecting girders and holes indicate that camouflage may have been attached. Somerset at War 1939-1945 Mac Hawkins 1996 describes a pillbox at Ilton disguised as a water tank, this is probably that pillbox. This shows the interior. "Somerset at War" also tells of another camouflaged pillbox at Ilton designed to look like a bus shelter, complete with a clock-face on the wall and timetables of buses that never ran! (photos Peter Forrester)
