Curry Mallet, Somerset World War 2 Pillboxes and Anti-Invasion Defences.

On a mound surrounded by young trees this gun emplacment still stands at Curry Mallet. ST 317216.

To see a map or aerial photo of this location.

The emplacement has a rounded overhanging canopy. Stones were set into the concrete on the base of the structure. This shows a side view.

The gun mounting is in good condition and the top plate measures approx 46 cm. in diameter. A magazine space is situated below the apron of the aperture to hold the ammunition for the 6 pounder ex-naval gun.

The rear has 2 loopholes and is approached up over a steep slope. The defenders would have entered and departed over the apron of the box, there is no rear exit. A very dangerous position to man when attacked by a determined enemy. This emplacement formed part of the Taunton Stop-line(Photos and text David Tacchi)
