| Sonic Adventure was Sonic's first true venture into 3D...not counting Traveler's Tales' horrible Sonic 3D Blast, of course. So, is it good? Well, the game is divided into each charcter's own gameplay style, so let's see: Adventure fields: The one thing every character shares is the adventure fields. This is one of the coolest parts of Sonic Adventure. This is the main gateway to all the levels of Sonic Adventure. However, unlike past 3D games with this so called 'overworld', Sonic Adventure makes you solve puzzles, and interact with the people to find out more about where you're going. This is one of the greatest assets to this game and it is missed in Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic: Sonic's main gameplay is all about the speed. This is amazing. Sonic moves along at blazing speeds throughout the entire level in an incredible manner. Sonic's spin dashes and jumping of old is back. Some truly great new moves also emerge. The first is the homing attack, an amazing addition to Sonic's one hedgehog arsenal. He zooms along at incredible speeds and homes in on enemies. Another great moie is the light spin dash. Simply power up your spin dash and zip along paths of rings at light speed. Tails: Tails shares most of the high speed gaming like Sonic does with two twists. One: he can fly, but he can't use the homing attacks or any of Sonic's spin dashes. Two: In most levels, he must race Sonic to the end of the level. So, is it fun? Yeah, beating Sonic isn't too hard, and it's fun to fly thorugh shortcuts you couldn't get through as Sonic. Knuckles: Knux has the worst gameplay in the game. He has all of his moves from the original games, plus he can punch now. However, his gameplay is the most boring. In each level you must either find the 3 missing emerald shards or emeralds. Very tedious, and the camera gets really annoying here. Amy: Amy's gameplay is fairly refreshing. She can't do any of Sonic's super fast or acrobatic moves, but she does have a hammer, which makes for a fun and more traditional platformer, although it is still as linear as Sonic's levels. Amy also has lots of fun mini-games to play throughout the game. Big:Arrgh. I take it back about Knux. Big's gameplay is simply the worst. I cannot imagine who in Sonic Team thought it would be fun to walk up to a pond and try to fish a frog out. Especially, when the controls are way too hard and confusing. Plus, Big is an annoying character. The only reason to lay as him is so you can reach... ...Super Sonic: I'm not going to tell you about how great this is, so get there yourself :). The graphics in this game are fairly good, although they aren't as good as the graphics in the later Dreamcast games. The opening FMV had me won over, though. The sound in this game is incredible. The production of it is great via Dolby Surround Sound. Most of the level themes are great. They're all extremely catchy. All the character themes are likewise great. However, the best song of all is the main theme, Open You Heart. This song is probably the best original song ever heard in a video game. (That means songs that you won't hear on the radio) Overall, this game is a huge step into a 3D world. Welcome back, Sonic. Overall: 9.25 |
