| Sonic the Hedgehog was probably the biggest thing to come out of the 16-bit era. It showed Nintendo that they were not alone. So, what about the quality of the game? Nintendo has no need to be embarassed, the game that allowed Sega to break into the market was a great one. Visually, Sonic was impressive at the time but by the end of the 16 bit era was pretty stale. The colorful graphics were great at the time, though. The sound is excellent. The sound production is flawless and the songs themselves are some of the best ever created. The gameplay is what stands out. Sonic is FAST. The reason why this game was so much better than Super Mario World at the time was that it was a refreshing break from the slow paced Mario games. Sonic's greatest advantage is his speed and his simplistic gameplay. But that's not all. Sonic 1 is probably the only 2D Sonic that relies a lot on precise jumping. That also makes it unique among Sonic games. The game is also incredibly innovative. Particularly, the game made use of blast processing, allowing it to move at its blazing speeds. Overall, this game is a 9. What a great and classic game. |
