Graphics: 7/10
The graphics look rather nice, however someone who played the original 
Blaster Master is going to be disappointed with the way SOFIA looks.  
SOFIA is no longer a white and red low-riding vehicle.  It's now blue 
and black and is taller.  They also screwed up on Jason.  Although they 
gave him legs (which do look a bit short), they made him look like a 
buffed up stormtrooper.  And in the first stage, there's a bunch of 
AT-ST-like things running around.  If we got a bunch of giant teddy bears, we 
could remake the Battle of Endor.  The animations are also poor at 
times.  Jason's running animation is almost as bad as the guy from Rygar.

Sound: 4/10
Most of the beat of the music wasn't bad, but the quality was a bit 
poor.  The times when the music itself was annoying was in the final stage 
where it sounds like a cat's getting its tail yanked to the music and 
the ending music that sounds like someone flailing their arms around the 
strings of a banjo.

Control: 3/10
What the programmers were thinking, I do not know.  While SOFIA and 
Jason respond well, there are several rather annoying things about the 
control.  First, SOFIA clings to slops.  This can throw off your aim.  
Second, when you aim, SOFIA locks in that position.  If you try to run 
while shooting diagonally up, SOFIA backs up with the gun facing the same 
direction.  Third, when you're playing as Jason and you come across 
something that's too small to be hit while your standing.  You need to 
duck.  But if you press down while your firing, you don't duck.  You start 
shooting yourself in the foot (The only uses I've found for shooting 
downward are that and once in the second area).  You have to release the 
fire button, THEN press down to duck.  Last, you have to press multiple 
buttons to do things like Exit/Enter SOFIA or caves.  This doesn't 
sound too bad, but it's possible to screw yourself over late in the game 
because of this.  You park yourself on a ladder and when you try to 
re-enter SOFIA you end up crawling down the ladder.  So you don't do what I 
did and reset the game if this happens, here's how you get back in.  
Stand where you normally would if you wanted to get back in and hold the 
fire button.  Now press the buttons.  Continue on your merry way.

Gameplay: 5/10
This is what happens when a good company like Sunsoft publishes a 
sequal to their classic made by a crap company like Acclaim.  The crap 
company screwed it up and the good company got blamed.  The feel of the 
original Blaster Master wasn't kept very well.  Sure, they have both the 
Platforming and the Overhead modes, but instead of having to search 
around for a warp to Area 4 in Area 1, the levels go in a line and there's 
no backtracking.  In all the other Blaster Master games except Blaster 
Master Boy (which wasn't even a Blaster Master game) there's only one 
item used once out of seven.  Here, almost half the items are only used 
once.  And the controls are screwy, and therefore just your average 
action game.

Buy?  Rent?  Borrow?  Burn?
If you're a true Blaster Master fan who wasn't fazed by the crap F.X. 
Nine put in the book or you're really bored, then pick this up.  
Otherwise, borrow it from a friend.

Overall - 5: Average.
I would have given this a 4 if not for the Jetpac.
