There are notes scattered everywhere so read them for a background story on the ship. Firstly make sure Mallow and Geno are in your party, go up, save in that room, head back, and to the left to the next room. This room, like many other rooms in this ship, has randomly appearing ghosts. Head to the next room. This room has many Dry Bones. These guys are resistant to physical attacks but a single special technique will defeat them. Also defeating them doesn't clear them from the play area. Head to the next room. Jump on the crates on your left and drop down into the corner. You'll get a flower. Head down the stairs and fight some Alley Rats. Jump on the stack of crates before the exit, jump onto the higher crates, and jump repetitively to get 100 coins from the Treasure Box. Go to the next room. Head left to the first room and fight the Greaper so you can go through. This is Clue Room 1. To get the clue, head left of the pylon with the cannonball on top of it. Quickly run around the pylon to the other side that is below the green exclamation switch. This will cause the Para Trooper to bump the cannonball on to the switch. When your party members gets flung off screen by the tentacles, they'll come back soon, scared as it's a fear attack. Defeat the 2 sets of 3 tentacles by getting Mario to use his strongest Fire attack, Geno to attack normally and Mallow should heal, use items, or Thunderbolt. After those two waves sets are done, attack the tentacles either side of King Calamari and attack King Calamari with full force (i.e Super Flame, Hand Gun & Whomp Glove), until he's defeated. You get 100 coins for defeating him.

Head up to the next room, jump up to the higher door, and enter it. Either:

  1. kill all of the Alley Rats for a clear way to the next room

  2. or hold "Y" and run like hell to the next room

Go down the stairs and fight some Ally Rats and go to the next room. Go to the top left corner of the room, jump on the barrels, jump over to the platform with the two boxes, hit them repetitively for 200 Coins, and go up to the next room. There's a Surprise Box in this room. Jump in the bottom right corner of the middle spot light and jump on the clone Mario to reach the Treasure Box which has a KerokeroCola. ("Got a 'KerokeroCola'!".) Go out the next door and head down to the next room. Go behind the stacks of crates and up behind them. You'll find a hidden room with a Treasure Box that has a Frog Coin inside. Hit the box and head back into the last room. Go down the stairs to the next room. Hit the Treasure Box for a "Recovery Mushroom", save, climb over the wall and hit the Treasure Box. Hidon is inside so use physical attacks. Use Mario's Super Jump and Mallow's Thunderbolt whenever he produces Goombettes. After he bites the dust, you get 100 Coins and the Safety Badge. ("Got a 'Safety Badge'!".) Climb back over the wall, exit this room via the stairs, go back down the stairs, save, climb back over the wall, and hit the treasure box repetitively for 100 coins. Head up twice, jump on the water, and swim to the whirlpool. Walk down and collect the 5 Frog Coins. You have to head up twice and go down the stairs killing as many star fishes as you can handle as you make it to the next room. To get into a secret room, head behind the crates and press right then up. The treasure chest has a Safety Ring. ("Got a 'Safety Ring'!".) Exit and and climb the crates to the far right until you surface. When you surface, head left avoiding the whirlpool to get to a Frog Coin. Jump out of the water to get it and head right into the next room.

"Pirate: Arrr! What's going on HERE?! Who're YOU...?"

They surround you.

"What?! You're lookin' fer a STAR? I'LL let ya see stars, arr harr!"

He jumps up.

"Anyways, yer outta luck! Ya see, whatever falls into the sea becomes JOHNNY'S property! Got that, MATEY?!"

"Oh, and one last thing... ...Read my lips... WE AIN'T LETTIN' YA THROUGH! GOT IT?!"

You have to fight four Bandana Reds. Use Mallow's Thunderbolt and physical attacks to beat them.

"Pirate: Arrr! You're stronger than ya look..."

He jumps up.

"Better warn the upper deck! Come on, mates!"

And they leave. Hit the Treasure Box for a "Recovery Mushroom" and head upstairs.

Four Bandana Reds rund down and run over Mario.

"            All righ, where's the intruder?!"

They look in different directions.

"            I don't see 'im."

"            Did he get away?!"

Mario gets up and a Bandana Red turns around.

"            THERE HE IS!, Get 'im boys!"

Mario runs up but stops when he sees two more Bandana Reds.

"            Here, this is on us!!"

A barrel rolls down but Mario crouches so it hits the bottom Bandana Reds.

"WHAT THE?! How dare you dodge the barrel!"

They exit.

Head up the stairs and exit.

One Bandana Red walks up to Mario.

"Pirate: HEY! How'd you get up here so fast?"

The other one joins him.

"Well, your "luck" has run out! We don't take kindly to strangers here!"

You fight five Bandana Reds so use the same approach. After they're killed, they back up.

"Pirate: You're pretty tough, mate. All right. I'll let you through to Johnny's place."

He opens the door. Head up.

"Johnny: So you're THE Mario, eh? Arr, harr, harr...! Not much to look at... Well, this star fell into MY SEA, so it's MINE! If you want it, you'll have to fight for it!"

Johnny- 820 HP
(4) Bandana Blue- 150 HP

Mario and Geno should use physical attacks on Johnny while Mallow uses Thunderbolt to defeat the Bandana Blues and heal occasionally.

Johnny steps up.

"Johnny: Fuwa ha ha... Not bad, fellas. How about it, Mario? Mario versus me! Wanna mix it up?"

Mario steps forward, nods, and jumps.

"Good fun! And good for you, too! All right. Here comes by backup!"

Two Bandana Blues show up and cheer for Johnny while your partners cheer for you.

Mario should use physical attacks while healing periodically (every 3 or so turns). (If you want to avoid the 1 on 1 battle get Mario, Mallow, and Geno to pick one Bandana Blue each to attack with physical attacks. When there's only Johnny and a Bandana Blue, get everyone to concentrate on Johnny.) You get 44 Ex.pts and 50 Coins for defeating Johnny.

The Marine Star will float to Mario, he'll grab it, and it's added to your "Star Pieces" list, temporarily. Head up, jump on the trampoline to exit the Sunken Ship, and head to the Seaside Town.

SEASIDE TOWN
Five offcolor Toads are standing infront of the entrance.

"Elder: Eee hee hee! You found the star! Well done! But your journey ends here. You are so gullible! Don't you know who I am? I'm "Yaridovich", a member of Smithy's gang. Shocked? It's no wonder! My impression of an ordinary person was flawless."

"Yaridovich: Your search for the star has worried Smithy. So if I take that star back to him, I'll earn brownie points. THIS is the way to get ahead! It's futile to try and fight me. Just hand it over, nice and easy."

Hand it over straight away or... Switch Mallow with the Princess and exit to the west side of town.

"Yaridovich: Blade's late. What's taking him so long? We need to get out of here."

He jumps up.

"Yaridovich: This is JUST great! Mario caught up with us. Only one thing we can do now. Although we may rust a little, we'll have to swim for it."

2 Bandana Blues and Johnny show up, blocking their way.

"Johnny: Not so fast there! That star's a gift to me mate, Mario. You spineless dogs have no code of honor! We'll make you walk the plank!"

A Bandana Blue talks to Johnny.

"Johnny, maybe we should leave Mario the pleasure of wrapping things up here."

Yaridovich looks at Mario, then Johnny, and Mario again.

"Yaridovich: Eee hee...! I guess we'll have to take our disguises off now... GROUP formation!"

They become one and you have to fight Yaridovich the Spear.

Yaridovich- 1500 HP
Mirage Attack produces:
Yaridovich- 500 HP

Get all your character to use physical attacks in him. If you attacked him the turn before he uses Mirage Attack, it will automatically select the right one. Get Toadstool to use Group Hug fairly often as his attacks like Water Blast can kill the whole party. Once defeated, Yaridovich gives you 40 Ex.pts and 50 coins.

The Marine Star will float to Mario, he'll grab it, and it's added to your "Star Pieces" list. The screen goes black with Mario in the middle.

"Smithy is now in the race for the Star Pieces! What horrible surprises might he have in store for Mario?"

Mario does his victory dance.
