The Dawning of a New Day

by Lucky Star

Part 1
Frozen
She watched the shuttle streak across the clear blue sky.  They had done it.  Zechs and Noin had broken away, forgotten about the war.  Why couldn't she?  Why could everyone move on except her?  She was still there, forever frozen in time, in that moment.  Every time she blinked or closed her eyes to welcome sleep, she saw his face.  It was so close and yet, in away, so far.  It hurt so badly she couldn't explain.  He could be so near that she could almost touch him but then in a split second disappear into a brilliant flash of light.  She was frightened of sleep, of being alone, of closing her eyes.  She lied in her bed staring at the ceiling waiting for morning, for light.
"Ms. Une?" the child paused looking at the women next to her.  Was she thinking about him again?  "Ms. Une?"
She slipped out of her thoughts, being pulled back to reality by the little girl with crimson hair.  Lady Une tilted her head towards the girl and smiled hoping the child didn't sense her sadness. ~So young, so innocent, so pure~
"Yes Meia?"
"Can we go home?  It's getting cold and I'm tired," Meia whispered softly afraid Lady Une would deny her request.
Lady Une gazed at the little girl, at her eyes.  Treize, she thought, your daughter has both fire and ice in her eyes, like you.  She took Meia's hand and walked out of the cemetery closing the rusty gate behind them as a single red rose lay on Treize Kushrenada's grave.

Part 2
Alive?
Zechs picked up the phone and dialed the number laid before him.  He needed to ask for himself why he was causing her so much pain?  Zechs knew that he was still in love with her; once you fall in love you can't fall out like he said.  One ring, two rings, on the third a man answered.
"Treize," Zechs paused, still finding it hard to believe he was alive.  Both of them had seen death in the face and miraculously escaped.  God had given both a second chance, only he, Zechs Merchise, had taken it, though.  Both of them had been found by the rescue crew sent to pick up the debris left from the battle.  They were smart people, they knew they could not tell anyone that he and Treize had lived because then peace would never truly be found.
"Milliardo, you have made it to outer space, with Noin I hope," Treize spoke with a hint of jealously in his voice.
"Yes, Noin and I have come to outer space to begin a life together.  But she is still on earth waiting for you.  She hasn't given up hope, yet.  Go back Treize, back to her," concern and worry distinctly noticeable in Zech's voice.
"If it were only that simple my friend.  I can't go back.  Not after the way she found out about Leia and Mariemaia.  It will hurt her too much."
"Being without you is more pain than she can handle.  Treize, it will kill her, sooner or later.  God saved your soul for a reason Treize, to say things you didn't have a chance to say before.  Go tell her Treize," even though Lady Une claimed she did not care for him, Zechs Merchise, he still found himself worrying for her.  They had grown up together with Treize.  All three of them were some how connected forever, no matter what happened.
"Thank you, Zechs," Treize said hanging up the phone and looking out the window.  Space, it was so lonely.  Maybe space truly wasnt lonely, only he was.
Part 3
Into God's Open Arms
Lady Une took unsteady steps as she climbed the stairs of the church.  What am I doing here?  Her mind inquired itself.  She looked at the girl next to her, holding her hand.  She smiled a little remembering someone telling her entering church was like walking into God's open arms.  As a child she found church to be one of the few places where she felt safe but that too was taken away with age.  Maybe Meia will feel safe in this asylum of hope.
I am here because of you Treize, because your daughter should grow up knowing about religion and God.  She should know that there is a place where your soul goes after death.  She paused.  No, not for you Treize, for myself.  I need to know that our souls don't slowly fade away when we leave this world like some old forgotten photograph.  I need to know you are somewhere in the heavens looking down upon us.
Lady Une opened the heavy church door being engulfed in the aroma of dust, age, and wisdom.  She closed her eyes remembering memories calling her name.  Her memories lingered around her; hidden in the silence; disguised in cloaks which became invisible with age.  It did smell well known, familiar.  It smells like the church we went to as children, Treize.
She had only set foot in the church when a man appeared before her.  His white collar peeked out from behind his massive black robe signaling he was a priest from the church.
"Hello, my name is Lady Une, and this is my daughter Mariemeia.  I wish to enroll her in your Sunday school.  I know it is short notice and the class will be ending soon but it would a great favor if you could."  Lady Une smiled holding back tears remembering why she hated churches.  They always talked about how if you did good you received good and if you did bad you received bad.  She hated being told what she could and could not do.  She hated it.  But why did she let Treize do it?
Meia looked up at Lady Une; she had called her daughter.  Was Lady Une her mother?  Mariemaia didn't recall her real mother.  She had been only two or three when she had died.  Lady Une was strong and kind like a mother.  She was like a mother to her, but did she love her?  Of course not, she loved Treize, her father.  She was only a reminder of the fact that Treize had had what she always wanted with another women, with someone other than her.
"Meia, Meia are you listening to me?  Meia?"
Mariemaia looked up at Lady Une unknowing of the matter discussed between the two adults.
"Mariemaia you must go with this nice man, he will show you where the other children are.  Is that okay?"
"You aren't coming?" fear and worry of being away from Lady Une visible in her voice.
"It is okay, my dear Meia.  I will be right here when you come back.  I promise."
Meia slowly came to realize that Lady Une wanted to be alone.  But here in the church, why?  To talk to God, to Treize?  She had no idea.  She followed the man walking deeper in to the church.  I'm sorry Ms. Une, Mariemaia thought as she left the presence of her Guardian Angel.

Part 4
Signs from God
Four years, Lady Une thought.  It had been four long years since Mother Kushrenada's death, four years since she had given up on religion and God, four years since she had last set foot inside of a church.
She remembered planning on coming to Treize's funeral but fell ill with a fever only days before. It had been a good thing though.  She knew if she had gone she wouldn't be able to control her emotions.  It was not like a real funeral, there was no body.  How could you mourn someone who was not truly dead?  She also wasn't ready to accept his death, ha, almost two years later and she still wasn't ready.  How sad, she thought to herself, even two years after his death you mourn his absence.  She walked down the aisle sitting in the first pew, stopping her mind from telling her such thoughts.
"I see you have found your way back, my child."
Lady Une turned her head to see a man in his late fifties looking at her.  She looked at the man's face; she had seen him before, but where.  Yes, it was the same man who gave the sermon every Sunday at the church near Kushrenada Estate.  She looked into his eyes finding the same kindness she had seen so many years before when she had informed him she was giving up on God.  Four years.  He had not changed in the slightest.  His hair, his eyes, the expression he adorned on his face, every wrinkle.  It was all the same, identical to before.  She paused; he had not changed in the last four years while she felt as though she had lived a thousand years and looked at least that old.
What is all this?  Why is he here?  Is he a signal from God?  No, you don't believe in god, or do you?  Her mind asked itself questions and did not wait to for the answers she could not provide.  She felt as though she would split down the middle, once again.  But she did not; some power held her together and cleared her thoughts.
"What is wrong, child?"  The elderly man questioned sensing pain and hurt buried deep inside of Lady Une.
"Do you believe God punishes those who do wrong, father?"
The man took a moment before deciding on an appropriate answer for her.
"Yes I do," he paused again choosing his words carefully, "God's wrath can be vengeful but he also gives forgiveness to those who ask for it."
Lady Une felt the tears again, making their way to the outside world.  No, she couldn't cry.  What would he think of her?  What would Mariemaia think?  She was supposed to be strong.  The one who softened your sobs not the one who was sobbing.  No, she could not cry.
"Do you want god to forgive you for your sins?"  He looked at Lady Une seeing the small child he had grown so fond of.  She had always been his favorite.  Some how she seemed out of place between Zechs and Treize, both of whom had inherited military futures.  "Tell me this child, do you want God to forgive you because of what you have done or because you are afraid of his punishment?"
"I wish to ask for forgiveness because I killed without emotion and regret.  Because I killed an innocent man in front of his daughter.  Because" she waited finding the tears she had held back resurfacing.
"Then God has forgiven you."
The man got up and left her alone in the large church.  Alone.

Part 5
The Balance of Life and Death
He sat there, the chilled wine had become warm, his thoughts revolved around one woman, His Lady.  Every time he closed his eyes he saw her, his nightmares of the battle had ended being overruled by sweet thoughts of her.  His mind told him it was wrong to go back to her after so long but his heart told him differently.  He was hers, of that he was sure, but was she still his?
He remembered the night Lady Une had told him she was his.  She told him everything and left him in awe of her courage.  He had kissed then for the first time and told her the same.
Leia, he never truly loved her.  She was the perfect woman for the heir to the Kushrenada Estate, according to his uncle who had arranged the marriage.  Even though he did not love her he would have spent the rest of his life with her because it was the chivalrist thing to do, but she was corrupt and was after his money not heart.  When he left he did not know about Mariemaia.  He regretted now not finding out.  He regretted letting that insane man Dekim raise the girl.  At least she was safe now with Lady Une.
His thoughts turned to the battle.  Finally after two years true and wonderful peace was at hand.  He remembered Lady Une asking him why he had to die to preserve the peace that would come when the battle ended.  He told her that him and peace were too different to co-exist, but here he was, alive and well.  The people have taken their own freedom in hand.
"You have done well Lady," he said to the small picture in front of him.
The battle had left him dead, he felt nothing.  The pain was unbearable but he managed.  He and Zechs both had.  The salvagers had found them.  They had taken them to a hospital but told no one who they were.  They were not the smartest people in space but had enough sense to realize there would never be peace if they were to enter the public's eye, once again.
His thoughts turned to her again; she had kept him alive through it all.  Her gentle voice sang to him and her sweet aroma filled him even though she was not there.  He spent nearly a year in the hospital learning how to do everything again and she was there in his mind every night and day helping him.
He missed many things from Earth and Space.  He missed the way the Earth looked from the stars and he missed the way the sun set and rised on earth.  He missed watching the stars come out at night one by one.  But most of all he missed her.  Her touch, her voice, her smell, her being.  All of it.  He missed watching her cheeks turn a rosy color when he touched her hand or face.  He missed watching her dance, which she rarely did.  He missed everything about her.  He missed her so much it scared him.  He had never felt this way about anyone.  Was this was what his life had been spared for?  Did God let him live because he had found the purest of pure loves.  Because he had found the childish love one loses when they become older?  Was this the reason Zechs had gone to be with Noin?  His mind did not have the answers to his insane ramblings.  He needed to hear her voice, to hear her breath, to hear her whisper his name.  He needed her or he would die.

Part 6
A Voice Hidden In the Shadows
Lady Une awoke to the shriek ringing of the telephone.  Who was calling at this hour?  Lady Une questioned herself, as she looked over at the clock, 4:45 AM.  It was a good thing in a sense; she wanted to escape her dream, the nightmare she saw in her sleep.  She had returned to that fateful day in AC 195, she was at MO 2, and once again (she) was helpless but to watch as that boy, Wufei, ripped her life up into a thousand pieces and set fire to the remains.  Helpless.  She hated that feeling yet she felt it so often.  Lady Une reached over the bed ridding herself of thoughts of the dream.
"Hello?"  Lady Une waited, expecting a reply, only receiving the sound of a man's steady breathing.
"Hello?"  Lady Une repeated debating whether or not to hang up.  And silently a voice from the shadows answered her question.
"Lady Une?"  The voice was unsteady.  As though they themselves were unsure of what they were doing.
*Lady Une* the tone of the man's voice, it sounded so intimate.  It seemed that even by just whispering her name he could stare into her soul and read her secrets, one by one.  Only one man had ever seen into her soul, told her who and what she was, only one.
"Treize?"  Lady Une's voice quivered with hope and the fear of disappointment.
The phone went dead, leaving Lady Une alone.  Alone with the dial tone.
Was it him?  Was it her soul calling her?  Was it?  Her mind received no answers as she lay down closing her eyes.
Rumors circulated declaring that the great Treize Kushrenada had lived through the battle, which changed the history of both Earth, and Space but none had been proven.  She wished now that she had listened closer to the two young girls outside the Preventer's Office waiting for their ride.  They joked at how someone so handsome had gone into hiding.  They whispered about how he had been greatly injured but survived with his life in hand.  The rumor sounded humorous to her.  She now wished she had, right there and then, told the two that she had seen the battle with her own two eyes.  That she had seen her love, her life, die before her eyes but they were young and foolish and made the world an easier place to live in.  So she let them leave and let their conversation fade into her memory.
He would return to her if he were alive, she knew he would.  She pushed the thought to the back of her mind as a single teardrop slid down the side of her face escaping the torrent battle inside of Lady Une.

Part 7
Stars in the sky
She lay in bed the sheets clung to her but gave her no comfort.  She missed the warmth, the touch, and the feel of another.  She missed having strong arms held her through the night.  And most of all listening to another's heartbeat simultaneously with hers.  She already had a hard time going to sleep and the phone call had pushed her over the edge.  All her thoughts pounded her mind like a hammer.  She felt her head would explode if she didn't leave the stuffy room.
She got up grabbing the shawl at the foot of the bed.  If she lay down in that cold hard bed any longer she would cry.  She made her way to the balcony opening the two French doors that were her only restriction to the outside world.  The apartment was small with only two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a small dining area.  She hated all of it.  It was always so dark and gloomy.  It seemed the atmosphere of the apartment reflected her own mood and feelings.
The view from the balcony was magnificent, though.  The nights she did spend at the apartment she spent here on the balcony.  It was a little stuffy.  There was barely enough room to put a sun chair, yet she felt safest here, more than anywhere in the world, now that Treize was gone.  The moon shown down upon her casting an eerie shadow.  It seemed close enough to touch.  A few rays of twilight streamed over where earth met outer space causing the stars to twinkle like diamonds in the sky.
She relaxed into the chair wrapping the shawl around her body to shield herself from the harsh autumn nights cold.  She looked up at the sky, so many stars.  She smiled as the faint memory of someone telling her stars were great people who God cherished immensely, so much he put them in the sky as stars, returned to her.  She believed this until she was to old to believe such childish things.
"If stars are people's souls when they die, I know you are among them Treize, shining brighter than any other star in the entire sky," she said quietly to herself.
She closed her eyes falling into a troubled sleep.

Part 8
Reality's Illusion
She walked through the dense forest; a few precious streams of light lead her towards something.  She could not see the object ahead, the trees were in the way but she had been there before.  It was another locked door in her mind that was filled with memories to which she did not possess the key needed to open the door.  As she walked the last bend in the road she saw the impressive mansion laid out before her.  It's Kushrenada Estate.  The trees cleared and sunlight bathed her like a crown.  She continued walking opening the large gate and was surprised to find it open.  She stopped; she had heard something, voices.
The voices were saying something leading her somewhere.  She looked at the scenery she had been here before, many times before but where was she.  It was the path that led to the willow trees.  It had been her favorite place in the entire estate.  When you lifted the thick blanket of willow leaves you would be surrounded by willows in all directions except the lake.  She loved coming there right after dinner when the sun was about to set into the western sky.  The colors smeared and caused it to look as though heaven's gates were opening right before your eyes.
She continued the voices grew louder and closer.  She pulled back the curtain of leaves to find no one.  She was alone.
She closed her eyes memories came flooding back to her.  She had been here with Treize.  They had come here before they left to conquer the Romefeller Foundation and Oz.  He had given her her first sweet taste of passion and love here.  She could still feel him here.  She opened her eyes as powerful arms took her in from the storm for a moment.
"Treize," she murmured.  His name had slipped out as (his) lips met hers and electricity ran down her spine.  And as suddenly as he had appeared he disappeared, before her eyes, slipping out of her hands once again.

Part 9
Listening to Your Heart
She stirred, awakening to a small sob.
"Meia?" she whispered her voice hoarse from lack of sleep.
Meia looked at Lady Une reluctantly.  She was safe; she didn't leave her like everyone else.
"What's wrong?" Lady Une said talking Meia's hand in hers.  She had fully awakened now and saw the tears that streaked down the poor child's face.
"I had a bad dream, I came looking for you but you weren't there, and I got scared," her voice trembled and her thoughts conformed becoming one muddled sentence.  She had been so scared, so alone.  She didn't like the other room.  It was dismal and made her feel sorrowful.  She hadn't plan on waking Lady Une, only coming and seeing if she was asleep.  But a whimper had escaped and took Lady Une back to this world.  She had been dreaming of him.  She had heard her whisper his name, so softly, it was barely audible.  Why did she wake Lady Une?
"Come here," Lady Une motioned to her lap.
Meia reclined into the chair with Lady Une.  It was cold; Meia thought as she shivered but before she could say a thing Lady Une pulled her into the shawl surrounding her with her warmth.
"Let's go away, Meia.  There is a place I have been meaning to go for a long time now.  You will love it there, Meia.  I promise."
Lady Une sang softly to Mariemaia, lulling her to sleep.  Her sweet voice soothed and calmed the young child's mind allowing her to sleep.
I am safe here; I don't need to worry anymore.  I don't care where we go as long as I am with her.  Meia closed her eyes and dreamed about candy and sweet things as all children do.
Lady Une stopped realizing Meia had fallen asleep.  She smiled feeling at peace for once.  Mother Kushrenada had once told her God gave signals to everyone everyday, only we are too ignorant to understand what they mean.  I'm not going to be stupid anymore, I swear Treize.  I understand what God wants, what you want.

Part 10
Homecoming
"Where are we going?" Meia asked getting impatient.  The plane ride had been nearly two hours and now they had been driving for over and hour and a half.
"Don't worry, Meia we are almost there," Lady Une said as they went around the last bend.  Just like in her dream the sunlight glistened on everything causing it to look like gold.  The mansion was just as beautiful as when she had left it.  The trees surrounding the grounds were beautiful, being painted in the color of apples, apricots, peaches, and pears.  The landscape was so pure, untouched by the destructive hand of man.  The chill of winter had already set in causing her to shiver as she climbed out of the car.
The sweet aroma of roses filled her entire being.  There were so many, white, pink, orange, and a single red rose.  She bent down holding the stem of the red rose, the thorns cut her skin but she pulled the rose, destroying it.  It was too beautiful, that is why it had to die, she thought calmly as she wiped the blood with a handkerchief.  Love is too beautiful that is why it dies with time, Lady Une thought comparing the rose to love.
Meia climbed out of the car looking at the astounding palace before her eyes.  She looked up at Lady Une, was this her home?  Was this the place where her father, Ms. Une, and Zechs Merchise grew up?  Yes this was Khushrenada Estate, technically it was Lady Une's estate and she could call it whatever she wanted since Treize had left her everything but she knew it would always be Kushrenada Estate, in honor of the family who raised her and made her the woman she was today.  Mariemaia looked away from Lady Une and gazed at the mansion once more, it did not look like a home but rather a fortress for some great empire.  The walls rose high above as though they felt they would reach heaven if they kept extending their reach.  It was so artistic and elegant she was left in awe.
Lady Une watched as the expression on Meia's face change from wonder and amazement to child-like anxiousness to explore the Estate.  She remembered feeling the same way when she had first seen the estate.  She had only been a little younger than Meia.  You will love it here Meia, I know you will, Lady Une said silently to herself.
She took Meia's hand and climbed the steps leading to the entrance of the palace.  She took out her key; she still had it even after so many years.  She pushed open the heavy door smelling roses.  The maid must have brought them in.  She already knew they were red, and there would be a dozen.  Mother Kushrenada loved having red roses in the house but only if there were twelve.  She passed that habit onto Treize, he would ask for one, twelve, never more or less.  As lovely as the house was it was lonely.
What did you expect to find here?  A voice inside of Lady Une asked.  Treize sitting in the dining room sipping wine asking you to join him?  The voice demanded an answer of her.  What did you want from here?  I came here to find him, if he is alive he will come here and rescue me, I know it.  Here she would wait, wait for the impossible.

Part 11
Opening Up and Letting Go
Lady Une raced down the long hallway.  Something was wrong; she had heard Meia scream from across the mansion.
Lady Une reached Meia sitting on the bed with tears falling from her beautiful sapphire blue eyes.  Lady Une sat down pulling Meia into her arms.
"What's wrong, Meia?  What happened?" Lady Une spoke with concern for the child.
Meia didn't hesitate a moment.  She trusts me, Lady Une thought.  She remembered waking up once before to Mariemaia's screams.  She had been to scared and frightened to tell Lady Une what had happened, but here and now, she wasn't.  Something had changed.  She wasn't afraid anymore.
"I was in the hospital and there were all these doctors and nurses and they kept on doing these tests and talking but no one would answer my question.  All I wanted to know was where my mommy was but they just came in and left like I wasn't there.  No one would tell me where *you* were.
Lady Une froze.  Mommy, did Mariemaia consider her, Lady Une, her mother?  This was her daughter?  When the Tall Geese II had exploded Lady Une had banished the thought of ever loving again or having a family from her mind.  She had been born alone and she would die alone but when she met Meia everything changed. The rules were different.  When Meia came into her life by some miracle the sun began to shine again.  She pulled Meia closer fearing she too would disappear like Treize.  Treize, where are you?  Come back to me, please.  I can't do this alone.  She was overwhelmed by emotion and didn't realize when Meia had fallen asleep again.  She lay Meia down knowing she would sleep through the night. ~So young, so innocent, so pure~
I was like her once also.  She closed her eyes remembering the nights after her mother and father's deaths.  She would awake to gunshots in the night and blood smeared across everything.  She didn't turn to Mother Kushrenada.  Treize heard her screams, and her silent pleas.  She never cried though, tears showed weakness, something her father and now Lady Une both hated.  She remembered before he died, her father told her never to cry, never let anyone so close they would see you cry because in the end they would hurt you much more.  Treize, I never let you see me cry but still you hurt me.  Tears stung her eyes; she couldn't cry her in front of Meia even though she was asleep.
She ran down the corridor and down the stairs and outside into the chill of the air.  She ran past the roses, their thorns cut her skin.  She stumbled but didn't fall; she had to continue running.  Her hands and legs had scratches from the trees and shrubs.  She reached the place she had been running to, holding in her tears.  She pulled the leaves only to fall and break the heel of her shoes.  Her ankle bled but the pain was insignificant and compared to nothing in her life.  Pain was part of everyday.  Waking up, going to sleep, and everything in-between was pain.  Everything, she thought, finally letting her tears out and crying for all the injustice the world had given her.  She was ofcourse in a world away from everyonelse's.  One in which happiness was forbidden.  She cried like a child not caring because she was alone.  She hated this world, she hated having two voices inside her head, two thoughts, two bodies, two minds.  Everything she did was criticized and questioned by the voices, by herself.  She buried her face in her hands and wept aloud in the loneliness which followed her everywhere she went.

Part 12
Seeing the Truth
Treize watched from the shadows, listening to her sobs and found his own heart cry with hers.  He still didn't understand why he had returned to earth.  Maybe he had missed its beauty so much that it had called him back to this place, or maybe it was her.
He stood in disbelief.  His Lady was crying, she never cried.  Even as a child, she screamed, yelled, kicked, threw things, but cry?  Never.  Crying showed she was weak and unworthy of him and his love.  She was crying for him.  Her sobs beckoned him and called his name.  He looked closer, her ankle; it was sprained and bleeding.  He needed to save her.  No, she needed to save him, from the darkness and loneliness that fed on his heart.  Somehow he had convinced himself he was dead to her, and her love for him was also dead.  But her sobs said differently.  She was more in love with him than ever before.
He stepped out of the shadows taking long strides towards his Lady, his love.
Part 13
The Dawning of a New Day
Something lifted her up.  Strong and welcoming arms raised her up from the icy hard ground.  They brought her close and kissed her tears away.  She didn't open her eyes wanting to cherish the moment before the object faded.  It remained; the solidness didn't leave her.  She was still in his arms and not on the floor hugging herself creating some image from past memories.
"Treize?" she whispered the only word which was still part of her vocabulary.  The only reply she received was kisses, kisses so sweet she didn't need an answer.  She knew it was him, he had returned.
He carried her home realizing that everything he needed in this world was her, in his arms, for all of eternity.

~I spent years wandering looking for someone like you, I made new friendships and destroyed old ties
~I searched my soul for answers I could not find, yet I know as little as before and only more questions have been aroused
~I cried at night hoping my tears called your heart, soul, and being in some foreign language unknown to others, even you and I
~I prayed to God to forgive my sins and accept my soul into heaven's gates, so I could be near you, once again
~And all the time I thought I was better off, being alone, watching the rain destroy my world
~But as I lie here with you in my arms and I in yours I come to realize, I was not running from you but from a life I once thought was forgotten, only to be found by me and you
~And all of time could go by, as I listen to your heartbeat watching the sun rise and set creating life for all who have loved
~I look to the sky and see the dawning of a new day on the horizon, as soft rays of love and life flood through my window and hide in my heart, for I have found a place where your mistakes and flaws are forgotten and love is the key which opens all doors~
