Assiniboia Southern Rebels 2002 - 03 Keystone Cup CHAMPIONS
| SOCKEYES WIN BRONZE - April 13, 2003 |
| The
Richmond Sockeyes scored five special teams goals in the first twenty
minutes in putting them well on their way to a 9-4 win over the Selkirk
Fishermen to win the bronze medal at the Keystone Cup in Portage. Tyler Henry took a slashing call just sixteen seconds into the game and Ray Sawada put Richmond on the board twenty-one seconds later. Sawada's second of the game at 10:47 was scored while his team was shorthanded. Garrett Seder then ripped home a pair of powerplay goals and then Sawada finished the hat trick with another Richmond powerplay goal with forty-five seconds remaining in the first period. Ricky Sikka would later score twice for the Sockeyes and other goals went to Stephen Sawada and John Crang. Chris Loschiavo, Mike Elder, Kevin Pleskach, and Chris Martin had goals for Selkirk. The Keystone Cup gold medal game pits the Assiniboia Southern Rebels from Saskatchewan against the Spruce Grove Regals of Alberta. | ASSINIBOIA STRIKES GOLD - April 13, 2003 |
| Three
consecutive goals in the first period was the difference as the
Assiniboia Southern Rebels downed the Spruce Grove Regals 5-2 in the
gold medal game of the Keystone Cup Western Canadian Junior
"B" Hockey Championship on Sunday afternoon. The tone was set in the very first minute as Troy Ball went off for slashing thirty seconds into the game. At 1:40, Rockie Zinger and Mike Volsky set the table for Ryan Walz and it was 1-0. Jarod Myers made it 2-0 near the midway point and then Geoff Neumeier scored with 3:48 remaining to up the lead to 3-0. Spruce Grove tried to make a game of it, and certainly set up an interesting third period as Davis Baroldi finally got to Derek Collier at 3:59 of the middle frame. Matt Harder scored a powerplay goal at 17:29 to cut the deficit to one heading into the final stanza. But, Zinger put a quick end to the suspense by making it 4-2 just twelve seconds into the third period. A powerplay goal with thirty-six seconds left on the clock by Walz sealed the deal. For fans wanting to view the scoring leaders, that portion will be updated later today. Thanks for stopping by Prairie Sportslink to get updates on the Keystone Cup.
