A Beach House at Piha
An atmospheric beach house at the end of New Zealand's most
famous surf beach. A perfect romantic retreat, family getaway or
setting for your special event, amidst the wild natural beauty of
the West Coast and Tasman Sea, 40 minutes from downtown Auckland
(NZ's sophisticated "City of Sails", commercial centre and recently home to
the Americas Cup). Comfort, seclusion and independence.

SPECIFICATIONS OF BEACH HOUSE:
LOCALITY:
- Accessed through the Waitakere ranges (Auckland's
pristine regional water catchment area), Piha is a place
of power and beauty, with a long beach of fine black
sand and spectacular rugged coastline, and a small,
environmentally sensitive community. A mecca for
swimmers, surfers and picnickers in summer, in winter it
is quite isolated, although surfing and fishing
enthusiasts visit year round (with average winter daily
maximum temperatures around 15 centigrade (60F); summer
around 27 (80F)). There are surfing and local social
events throughout the year. The property adjoins a
wild-life sanctuary with bush-walks. Join in, or just relax and watch
the world go by from the deck, or the fireside.
-
HOUSE:
- Sunny, sheltered north-west aspect, at the end of South Piha beach.
Glass doors along
front of house, polished wood floors, huge deck.
Panoramic beach and ocean views. Grounds grass and mature
native bush, frontage fenced. Off road parking.
Redecorated and furnished 1998 - 2003.
-
- The house is completely sheltered from the prevailing south-westerly winds. In winter, leave the doors open and bask in warmth in front of the open fire, watching the storms rage over the sea, without a breath of wind! On a fine winter's day, sunbathe on the deck or in the sheltered garden! Unlike many beach spots, the garden is wonderfully lush and fertile, and the beautiful pohutukawas provide welcome shade from the heat of the beach in summer. Enjoy the delights of the summer's atmosphere from your own private vantage point.
-
ROOMS:
- Open plan living/kitchen with 3 double fold-out futon
couches. Living room and main bedroom (with queen size
bed) face onto beach. Nursery/dressing room with 2 single
bunks. Second bedroom with double/single bunk set. 2
basement rooms with 2 single beds and double futon/couch.
Sleeps up to 15. Walk out onto the soft sand, looking down to the rock pools at the end of the beach and out over the ocean and to North Piha.
-

water distiller, jug, toaster, food processor,

LOCAL FACILITIES:
- Piha is famous for it's ecological beauty, but with that extra touch of everything you could wish for, not too far away. Our house is a secluded oasis, but within close reach of everything Piha has to offer. It looks out straight onto the best surfing spot in Piha, at the most sheltered end of Piha beach. During swimming season, the safe swimming area patrolled by lifeguards is a stone's throw away. A short walk to the lagoon and other pools for children to swim in year round. If you can drag yourself away from the
house, it's just a short stroll around the beach to all of Piha's 3 excellent licensed restaurant/clubs, and a cool art gallery featuring unique original crafts through to works from some of New Zealand's leading artists (and their parties are not to be missed!) Pick up a hot gourmet pizza for the stroll back. Pam and Mike Jolly have a delightful cafe/craft shop up the hill, overlooking the beach, where Mike makes and repairs surf boards. There are world-famous wineries
and more restaurants heading towards Auckland, open most
nights, and in Auckland itself some of the best dining in
the world - from great cafes to interesting bars to
formal restaurants (examples).
Newspapers, groceries and delicious home baking and
delicatessen items are available between 9 am and 5 pm
from the Piha Store at the North end of the beach. There is a post
office and a small library with video hire. Full shopping facilities are
available 20 km away at Henderson or Titirangi. Surf equipment hire
and surf fashions are available up the road, and there is horse-riding and
many other activities and places of natural, historical, and cultural interest nearby. To see just a few of the spectacular natural features on one walk, click on our link More
