More Homework is Needed
By Ben Salinas
Students need more homework. Our school was made to give students something to do at home, other than playing games, and rotting their brains. I know that homework is the only reason I came to Science Academy. I did not even give a thought about the technology classes, the lenient dress code, the daily hour tour of the most beautiful part of the Valley, or the 14 year undefeated football team. The only reason I came was the promised 5 hours of homework each night.
When I go home and have nothing to do, I usually will try to do something stupid and hurt myself. It is a proven fact that when students do not have work to do, they become violent. Before we know it, our school will be nothing but a clan of vicious Visigoths which happen to know 600 SAT vocabulary words.
The other day I found that I had no room in my locker. If you have seen my locker, then you might understand why. However, I always have enough room in my locker once I take out the books I need for my homework, which usually include the largest books.
Homework builds your strength. I am not talking about integrity, or mental strength. I mean it literally builds your physical strength. When you take home 4 books, which add up to 20 pounds on your back, you must be building some muscles. Therefore, if students were given more homework, Physical Education could be taken out of the curriculum.
Homework also allows students to become more efficient. If students were given more homework, and the same amount of time to do it, they will become more efficient. The hour before school would let students complete all their homework, provided they are able to do 25 calculus problems, write 2 essays, memorize 25 vocabulary words, balance 15 equations and prepare for a presentation. This will allow students to become quicker, which allows students to work faster. Eventually the general population will become so quick that each period can be shortened to 45 minutes and the day can be cut in half. Students will also become better at writing in moving vehicles. This is a lifelong skill which is up there with “Nose Flute Playing” and “Twist Tie Tying.”
Homework is also a good way to get out of doing other work. With more homework, most students would never have to mow the lawn again. I guess if all else fails, then I can use all my books to throw at my fellow students chasing me while I am boarding my plane to Switzerland.
