History
Poetry is the oldest form of literature that we know of, all other forms of literature grew out of it. It is also one of the oldest of all art forms. Poetry is believed to have been an oral art form before man learned how to write, making it even older than records show. It was also an important part of early religions, believed to have been more powerful then ordinary types of language.

Later, poems told tales of heroes and adventures, told by wandering poets who travelled from place to place. These poets were often honored guests wherever they went, appreciated for the enlightenment and entertainment they shared.

Today poetry is fading out of favor due to newer types of literature. Short stories and novels are among the most popular now. These are easy to understand, but can such forms of literature provide the meaning, thought, expression, and purpose as poetry can?
