| Calcutta as it used
to be known has been through many incarnations. |
| From an obscure
village banks of Hooghly river, it evolved into the
capital of |
| Great Britain's
Indian empire. For quitesometime, it has becomethe
capital |
| of west Bengal. In
2001, Calcutta became Kolkata,the bengali pronounciation |
| of its name. When
we arrived, the first impression was, it's so crowded
& pollution |
| is in the air,
poverty is a transparent sight, dirty in some places yet
it is nevertheless |
| full of character.
It's noisy jumble of bazaars & pavement stalls are
something |
| anybody wouldn't
miss. The street where our hotel was a picturesque of a |
| cosmopolitan
atmosphere, smart boutiques & restaurants. We started
our visit to the |
| Victorial Memorial,
a spectacular symbol of imperial domination. Obviously, |
| the grandeur of
Imperial capital is slowly decaying. There remains, |
| the history of the
city in Oil painting & watercolors, hanging on the
wall. |
| Time constraint, we
skipped the museum. |
