Our Paris Apartment

The Living Room -- Nabil and Emmanuelle built the

fireplace around a "new" antique limestone mantel.

The old stained glass window leads to the kitchen. All the books on the table we brought with us.

Setting them out truly made the apartment feel like home.

There are two large windows …

…with a pretty view down the street.

Dan is hard at work on the Grand Tour Web site in the dining area.

The plaster has been removed from this wall to expose the almost 400 year old stones.

The bedoom walls are panelled and covered with a yellow damask.

The new closets were built around an antique armoire.

A large beam runs through the center of the apartment. In the living room, they exposed it.

In the bedroom, they repaired the plaster (n.b. some of the decorative crown molding in the restoration is styrofoam covered with plaster -- but you cannot tell.)

In 1954, 80% of Parisian apartments did not have a private bathroom. Ours has a new bathroom (with the stone wall partially exposed) and a separate WC.

In the hallway, the terra cotta tiles date from the 17th century. The wood floor is in the living room.

Our apartment is on the third French floor (fourth American floor). The old staircase is steep and narrow.

But it is fun to imagine the footsteps that have preceded ours.
