Establishing an Unbound Cell

Obviously, we cant just waltz into a city, declare it to be Unbound, and start setting up our just society. Even here in Seattle, there is a prince and primogen to contend with. Although they are weak here, we must still be cautious, lest we seem too ambitious. They can always call in the archons and justicars, after all.

So how do we begin? Slowly, my friends, and with great patience.

If those of you who agree with this manifesto are already in Anarch-held territory, then youre in luck. Many of these precepts can be debated openly, and your councils can be amended to include some of these governmental ideas. Change will come faster, but with it will come greater responsibilities. As you build the just society in your cities, keep in mind that you will be setting the stage for other revolutions to come. You will make mistakes, to be sure. Just make sure that you learn from them.

If you are in a Camarilla city, then you have problems. Most princes will not brook any dissent; keep in mind that even owning a copy of this could get you in hot water. Add to the mix that Caitiff, Clanless, Thin-Blooded and Anarchs are already persecutedit gets messy.

But its not impossible. The first thing to do is to start talking and getting these ideas out there. You may have to couch them in subtler rhetoric than this, but start planning the seeds of ideas in the heads of your fellow neonates and ancilla. And keep these precepts close to your heart dont leave out the Ventrue neonate just because hes a Ventrue. Leave him out only if it seems hes more interested in Status than in freedom.

Once you have a group of like-minded people together, stake out some territory. Go to the barrios or suburbs if you have to, but find some domain of your own that isnt claimed by another vampire, and start administering both the domain and yourselves as part of the just society. Report to the prince only if you must. Otherwise, simply go about your business. Others will see you gather together and ask, and youll have something to show them the beginnings of your Unbound society. Slowly, youll see others start to gather under your banner. Treat them equally and well. Throughout the process, never forget what youre fighting for.

There may then come a time when your society becomes a potent minority or even outnumbers the rest of the Kindred in the city. Time to gather arms and put down the Camarilla, right? WRONG. You might as well throw aside everything that youve struggled for. How is it fair to believe in our own right to free existence and deny it to other Kindred? So if you achieve this critical mass, start extending a hand to the rest of the Kindred in your city. Invite them one at a time to your council and extend to them the full rights of the Unbound. Let them be heard and let them vote. They may see that they have more to gain by joining you than fighting you.

If our society is truly just, then we will have many converts, and we will eventually have the strength to face the prince and primogen. Again, extend to them full rights as Unbound Kindred. If they refuse, allow them to live out their lives in the city. There will be some among you who will probably tweak these recalcitrant elders thats to be expected. But respect their beliefs and Traditions, as you would have them respect yours. It will be an uneasy truce, but eventually they will decide to either act against you or leave. If they leave, so much the better. Your citys Kindred can realize the true benefits of a comprehensive society. If they act against you, defend your rights and freedoms. If the society votes unanimously upon it, then those who fight you can be destroyed. This should only be a last resort, however. We must adhere to our ideals, even in this.

Now, if youre in a Sabbat citymove. I ran with a Sabbat pack in its early, formative days. The idealists that formed the sect are jaded, and the young only know blood and death. My compatriots and I have discussed this at length, and we are no closer to coming up with a strategy for dealing with the Sabbat than we were many nights ago. Avoid them if you can, fight for your life if you cannot. Individual rights have no meaning in their Vaulderie-soaked collective. We may even have to fight them one day. I pray that it wont come to that.

The same, unfortunately, goes for our Cathayan cousins. I had the good fortune, many years ago, of spending an evening in conversation with an Eastern vampire. This Kuei-jin, as she called herself, told me much of her race of beings. They are not vampires in our sense of the term. They are deeply spiritual beings, charged with shepherding the world through a cycle of ages. Unfortunately, their religious system sees us as the antithesis of this cycle. They believe we need to perish for the world to be at peace. They might even be right, but I for one am not interested in putting that thesis to the test. Simply put, dont trust them.
