A word from our sponsor....
To the Class of 1963- Thank you again Pierre for getting this up and running so quickly. I wish to announce to all readers from the MVHS Class of 1963 that I have been receiving $10+ subscriptions from members for a newsletter etc. I have also received a umber of thankyous from our classmates along with checks. Recently I received some pictures from Lenore Jackel and Judy Lange. Judy has also sent a large group to Susan Satenstein. We are planning a January tri-state mini winter class get together somewhere in Westchester. Looking for a nice warm cozy spot for drinks, chat, intimacy, excitement, silliness and food. A working sesssion to determine this spot and time is tentatively scheduled for November 8th at my house 101 Prospect Street WP. Also we are planning a large class size mailing to announce our short term plans and long term goals. This will include work on semiannual newsletter, a data base for all, a picture reunion book, a video tape and plans for a milenium reunion . Stay tuned RJG [Richard Garfunkel]
Dear MVHS Friends and Classmates: For some weird reason, known to no one at the present time, my dear son, Jon, Princeton 1998, decided while he was home for a short time, to connect, outside of Eudora (our e-mail provider), his own e-mail address as a reply destination. In other words when I send something thru the MVHS website, please reply to [email protected] until further notice. Even webmasters, who make their living on the internet for Fortune 500 companies can't undue often what they have wrought. But besides all that silliness, we had our post reunion meeting at my house today. Ayn Silverman, Mike Rosenblum, Peter Altieri (Susan Satenstein was unavailable)and I reviewed some of our plans for potential MVHS class of 1963 events. We decided to work on some mini-reunions for early May (first week) and mid-October, instead of this coming January. Winter and summer were first thought of, but vacations and tempermental NY weather cause us to re-think our previous positions. A mailing will go out describing our thoughts on various topics. By the way with great pastries brought by Peter, peanuts and cider provided by the host, and a drab of Amaretto we spent a few pleasant hours. We also watched my videotape of both the 30th and 35th reunion. I will gladly provide a single copy of both events, and some added tape of Henry L. at my house five years ago with some MVHS friends, a nostalgic trip back to Henry's old homes in MV and a visit to Columbia U with our mutual friend Doug Garr MVHS class of 1967, a great wrestler, Section I champ and a State runner-up for $20 ( a part of that will go to the class of 1963 organization.
By the way happy to see the picture of the MVHS 1963 Section Cahmpionship team seniors posted. Let me say- please correct Henry's name to Littlefield from Littleton?
Done - pierre
I would like to add some background on that team of which I had a very close association.
First of all the only senior starter not at our reunion was Mike Viggiano, a 1963 Section Champ.
We were 12-1, with only one loss to Nassua Counties Freeport High School. We won the Section I Championship with a record 92 points (Section I consisted of schools from Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess Counties). We placed 8 wrestlers in the finals and had 4 firsts and 4 seconds.
The Lineup was as I recall (without notes)
101lbs Jim Gordon Sr 2nd place 106 John Carlucci Jr lst place 112 Luigi Manente Jr. 120 Al Schultz Sr 130 Pete Sisto Sr 2nd Place 141 Armel MacDonal Sr 148 Mike Viggiano Sr lst Place 157 Ray Johnson Jr lst place 168 Jim Lee Jr 2nd Place 180 Howie Wilson Sr lst Place HWY Ricky O'Daniel Jr 2nd Place
Pardon me for being a pound or so off in the classes. I will check my records later on. Henry Littlefield, won his first of five consecutive Section I championships in the team's second full year. MVHS remained undefeated in Section I for five straight years, with losses only to traditional Section 8 & ll powers from LI's Nassau and Suffolk counties. Henry capped off his great coaching career with State Titles in 1966 and 1967. In 1968 he moved on to Northampton, Ma and assumed the directorhip of a Federal project involving teaching history in that local school district. The next year he was Dean of Students and the wrestling coach at Amherst College. More to follow RJ Garfunkel
Attnetion MVHS Class of 1963- the video tape of the 35th reunion, along with tape of the 30th reunion, plus an evening with Davis people and Henry Littlefield and a nostalgic trip to MV and the 3 homes of HM Littlefield plus a trip to the Columbia Penn game, Baker field Oct 1993 with Doug Garr, HML and myself is available for $20. (cheap) currently in the process of making copies at this present moment. All net monies after expenses will be donated to the ongoing and growing Class of 1963 account. RJG

I was just at the "Class Site" and thought I'd send a note and say hello. I was hoping to make the last reunion but was out of town on business. Hopefully, I'll be able to make the next one. In any event,it was really great browsing the site and as you might suspect, I recognized many names that I'd hadn't thought of in 35 years (brought back some very nice memories). Nice to know so many are still around, and in case you're wondering what I've been doing since High School, here's a very brief snapshot:
After Davis, spent two years in the US Army, 502nd Military Police, Fort Hood Texas. I took a couple of courses in the service and found out, to my surprise I might add, that I had a very strong aptitude for mathematics and electronics.
After the Service, got married, and went to college full time under the GI Bill: BSEE, MSEE, PE (All Electrical Engineering, Electrical Energy Systems Engineering, Electronics ,etc.).
I have two children. My son got married about a year and a half ago and will make me a "grandfather" this August. My daughter is getting married in May. Where in the world did the time go?? We recently built a house in East Fishkill (planning for my eventual retirement) and my wife just retired from banking. She was a Vice-President for Citibank, Fleet, Nat West, and a few others.
I'm still with IBM but will be moving over to AT&T in a couple of months. I'm a Senior Project Manager for their Global Network and we (about 6,000 of us) were just bought by AT&T. I've been working for IBM for about 20 years and have had jobs ranging from designing Power Distribution Systems for Redundant Parallel Processors to building Semiconductors Lines in East Fishkill (chip fabrication lines for both memory and processors for various Process Test Sectors i.e., epitaxial, thin films, barrier metals, diffusion, C-4, etc.). I also spent about 8 years at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown designing and building "Super-Computers" and for the last 4 or so have been building IBM's domestic Internet 1.1 Backbone.
Like all of us who have been roaming around this earth for the last 35 years, there's a lot more, but in a brief "nutshell", that's about the story. Hope all is well with your families and if you get a chance, drop a line and say hello.
Best Regards, AL

Best wishes to all of you...please drop me a line,, even if you just vaguely remember me (the tall 5'10" skinny as a rail blonde from AB Davis). Just got back a week ago after an exhilarating week in NYC! Was wonderful to touch base again with the likes of Sue Satenstein, Andrea Alexander,Margie Starobin, Ayn Silverman, Richie Garfunkel, and Janet Peters. It was a small group, but did not lack for warmth of spirit...we all got together a few times, the girls all had dinner downtown that Friday night at a Brazilian restaurant which was fun, and the picnic got rained out on Sunday. The highlight of the weekend was Tony DiRienzo's rock and roll show, which we all enjoyed immensely. It featured the Elegants and the Duprees, among others, who were sensational. Our thanks to Tony for arranging for us to all sit together.
Heard from Craig Paff today...seems to be doing well and is looking forward to his trip to France and Israel in a month or so. Skip and I are now busily planning our trip to Europe ourselves...will hit Amsterdam, Brussels,London (my first time), Paris, southern Germany, northern Germany (used to live in dusseldorf in '65) and back to Amsterdam...all in two weeks. If it's Tuesday, its gotta be Belgium!!! Any tips on London? Stonehenge is on the sidetrip list, but what about local sights? Dont have time for them all...did you get to London on your recent trip there? Any pointers you can give me on any area of the trip would be welcome.
I attended my mother's 92nd birthday party while there...a day not to be missed. She is well and sends her regards to your mother, as well. It was nice that they got to correspond a little after all these years. I hope your mother is doing as well as mine seems to be!
Gotta run...best regards to you and all the rest of the class of 63! Those who didn't attend the mini reunion missed a fun weekend.

Henry Littlefield passed away yesterday. His loss will be keenly felt by all who knew him. He was a great friend, mentor, coach, and teacher to generations from his days at Columbia, to AB Davis HS, to MVHS, to Amherst and to the York School in Monterrey, Ca. Henry attended our 30th and 35th HS reunion and was welcomed with open arms. Henry had never changed over the years and his uplifting messages of hope, inner peace, and encouragement were always an inspiring philosophy.
Richard Garfunkel writes:
The world of amateur wrestling marked the passing of Dr. Henry M. Littlefield, who lost his two-and-a-half year bout with colon cancer on March 30. He was 66, and he was considered by those who knew him as a renaissance coach who combined history, philosophy, and basic technique to teach the sport. More than 1,000 mourners, including several former wrestlers and coaches, crowded into his memorial service on April 8. Littlefield, who lived in Pacific Grove, CA., was best known for his record as a coach at Mt. Vernon (NY) High School, where he built a first-rate wrestling program from nothing. His teams dominated the league, county and sectional tournaments for several years. In 1966 and 1967, the Mt. Vernon Knights won the unofficial New York state championship team title. In 1966, he had three placewinners, including a champion, and in 1967, he had two winners, a second, and a third. Both years, his teams outpointed powerful rivals from Lindenhurst, Sidney, Mepham, and Calhoun, all of which had longstanding top wrestling programs with marquee coaches such as Jack Stanbro and Ken Hunte.
Littlefield's avocation was the theater, where he was an actor in many community productions. A member of the Screen Actor's Guild, he frequently used theater to teach. Students were treated to an annual comic production where he traced the history of wrestling, beginning with the Greeks and ending with pro theater and both Olympic styles. The wrestling team was enlisted as actors. One year, as the school's head disciplinarian, he sentenced repeat offenders to calisthenics with the varsity. The number of incidents quickly declined. The following year Littlefield, who was an American history teacher (voted by the students as "best teacher" for several years), became head coach at Amherst College, where he was Dean of Men. While at Amherst, Littlefield met John Irving, a former Pitt University wrestler and already a best-selling novelist. Irving worked out in Littlefield's wrestling room, and read chapters of his works in progress to the Amherst team. When Irving published his essay-cum-memoir, "Trying to Save Piggy Sneed," he made an affectionate reference to Littlefield. Littefield then moved west to Monterey, CA, where he coached football and was headmaster at the York School. He lived on the Monterey Peninsula for 24 years, and he was a fixture in the local academic community.
As a wrestler, Littlefield competed for Columbia University, and he was a familiar heavyweight on the amateur circuit, competing actively in Metropolitan, Eastern, and National AAU tournaments. He had a longtime rivalry with the NYAC's legendary Bill Farrell, finally beating him after several losses. He also earned a black belt in judo while serving in the Marine Corps. He played on the Third Marines championship football team.
But it was as a coach that Littlefield's reputation grew. He emphasized basic maneuvers and drilling, believing that fundamentals and conditioning were the keys to winning. He felt that in order to develop good wrestlers, Mt. Vernon had to compete against the best opponents. He frequently scheduled matches outside his geography, where he knew his squads would be overmatched. He was a master at motivation and inspiration.
Littlefield is survived by his wife of 43 years, Madeline two daughters, Mary Littlefield of Boston and Kate Brill of San Jose a sister, Helen Michelson of Glen Rock, N.J., and a grandson.

My wife, Inge, and I had dinner with Charlie Pignataro and his wife Susie and two daughters last night in White Plains. Charlie and Susie, who live in Hawaii, were on a college hunting trip for their oldest daughter, now a high school senior. Also attending from '63 were Willy Spada and his wife Alice, and Larry & Terry DiMargo. While in the resturant I heard a familiar voice and ran into Myron Pollack. Myron, who was another wrestler, never made it to the 35th reunion, and may have been one of the missing(?). So, here is his email for your files: Ed.: added to the mail page Hope you all have a good 4th of July. Al Schultz

To the Class of 1963 and all its friends-
Heading out to California on July 20th. Linda and I are off to see SF, the coast of Calif and LA. On the way we are stopping by Pacific Grove, on the Monterrey Peninsular to visit with Madeline Littlefield.
In regards to the Jon Breen Fund newsletter, I hope that this effort has been worthwhile for the class. I would love to have some input from any of you out there in cyberspace. I would like to do a year-end letter that could pass on some of your activities and thoughts, especially about our coming 40th re-union.
Meanwhile have a great summer, there is still much to go and keep in touch- RJG
