THE layout of Table R in Section 3 of "SYMBOLS" is different from the others as this Section contains all the odds and ends that have less than 10 examples each of their symbols. They are listed alphabetically by their normally accepted names first, and where there are enough of them, by region after that, as per the rest of the Tables 3.
A good number of these have only one surviving example, and the "Step" for instance, might represent different things.
As with all other stones, where these symbols appear on
fragments or broken slabs, there is no way of telling what other
things they might have originally occurred with.
The Dunnicaer Stones are an obvious exception, since they are
outside the usual styles of carvings, and on individual small
stones. They may represent "apprentice" pieces, but
they have more in common with the crude cave carvings, and may
not be Pictish at all. They are only included because they are
generally accepted as Pictish.
