GARDEN OF SHAME?

IN A SURPRISING DEVELOPMENT on thursday morning
June 8, workers showed up at the "Spanish Garden" and

closed the small park, erecting an unsightly fence of  orange mesh and unfinished boards to entirely bar access to the area which has for years been a public oasis at the corner of St. George & Hypolita streets.  Previously, tourists and locals enjoyed the use of the garden which is owned and maintained by The San Augustin Foundation.  A plaque at the site identifies it as The Spanish Garden and indicates it is a gift to the city.
Workers explained that there was to be an archaeoligical dig at the site soon. So far no permit for such has been obtained.  This being a lengthy process one wonders if the motivation for closing the entire park so soon might be that of barring the Street Artists and Performers already banned from adjacent St. George St. We await the dig with eager anticipation .  And we wait to see what kind of legacy the perpetrators of this will leave to

The Ancient City in place of this once lovely garden

And what becomes of the legacy of these women who worked so hard to endow the people of the city with this garden in perpetuity?
