| Why do toyota beds rust so bad? - The older beds are constructed with many seems, which are caulked shut. perfect for rust. Also dirt tends to get between the bed side and the inner (removable) bed wall. Rust is the result. I've also been told that the steel was of a type that rusted more easily. I really don't know on that one. I rather doubt it. This thing has no power, now what? - There are many ways to up the power on a 4 cyl truck. Cams, intakes, headers, big carbs. V6 trucks can benifit from many of the traditional mods too, but the only way to get big power in an older Toy is to do a v6 or v8 conversion. Use low range off road. OK, I want to do an engine swap. Will the Toy drivetrain hold up? - Transfer cases yes. Trannys maybe. The 5 speed units are the strongest, but you can't abuse even them behind a V8. Drive shafts and rear ends are fine as long as you aren't running a top fuel engine. Use sense. 500 hp into something designed for 150 ussualy ends up with some extra peices. Where do I turn for custom parts? - Northwest offroad has lots of stuff. They are Toy specific and offer top quality tested stuff. They are expensive though. John's foreign engines is great for engine parts. 4 wheel parts is good for suspension lifts, wheels, and such. There are lots of places out there. Shop around and look for people who know thier Toys. What's up with the oil leaking on the inside of my front tires? - The solid front axle trucks employ a "Birfield" joint. Over time, the seals in these leak. A little leakage is ok. If it gets bad, you must pull the hubs apart, get to the joint and rebulid. Which is better carb or FI? - Well, in short, FI. Most people have no trouble with thier fuel injection. When you do, it's a pain, but they ussually don't "go bad" plus the power is quite a bit better and you can work on hills better. Although I've never run into trouble with my carb. What's the best mod for the money? - Body lift. See my page on that. Makes room for tires and costs virtualy nothing. On board air is also a good one. If you're truck has an AC compressor, you're 1/2 way there. |
