Siena, 22-25 May.

We got HORRENDOUSLY lost in Siena several times.  Suggestion to Lonely Planet: include things outside the city centre in your maps.  Also, they directed us onto the wrong bus, so we ended up stranded out in the countryside, tired and sweaty and with awfully heavy luggage, not speaking the language, and covered in dust, becoming slowly more convinced that the hostel we were looking for did not in fact exist.

It was at this point that I displayed behaviour which, if Lyah had murdered me, would have been considered to be justification for the act.

Gorgeous ancient housefronts somewhere near the city centre.

Sienese gothic somewhere near Il Campo.

The view from the Piazza del Mercado, behind the Palazzo Publico.  We found a great little trattoria back here, which we ate at for almost every meal.  This was the view from our outside table.

I took about a million pictures of the Palazzo Publico, but none of them came out too well, so the landmark of Siena is missing from this page.  Sigh.  To me, Siena will, above all, always mean "spicy ravioli," which I suppose is a good thing.
