This is a photographic documentation of my side marker light install using ultra brite LED lights. My primary purpose for building this was to help other people to see ME at night. In my first version, I decided to use 4 side facing LEDs and 2 rear facing LEDs to increase visibility to the rear as well as to the side (think along the lines of a water cooled Porsche 911), but after 1 week I burnt out 3 of these non resistor LED arrays which were much brighter than I expected. I also didn't think it was a good idea to have tiny yellow spot lights lighting up cars in the next lane. My next version had 2 fewer LEDs and added 4 680 ohm 1/2 watt resistors and I'm still testing them. Leds in the version 2 array have the tips of the LEDs filed flat to reduce the spot lighting effect and are glued further away from the wheel well due to a need for improved aesthetics and a better mounting point. I had to remove the side chrome trim piece and glued the version 2 arrays to a bumper support. They are now much more secure and much more stealthy until I turn the lights on.
