In my first version, I decided to use 4 side facing LEDs and 2 rear facing LEDs to increase visibility to the rear as well as to the side (think along the lines of a water cooled Porsche 911), but after 1 week I burnt out 3 of these non resistor LED arrays which were much brighter than I expected.
I also didn't think it was a good idea to have tiny yellow spot lights lighting up cars in the next lane.
My next version had 2 fewer LEDs and added 4 680 ohm 1/2 watt resistors and I'm still testing them.
Leds in the version 2 array have the tips of the LEDs filed flat to reduce the spot lighting effect and are glued further away from the wheel well due to a need for improved aesthetics and a better mounting point. I had to remove the side chrome trim piece and glued the version 2 arrays to a bumper support. They are now much more secure and much more stealthy until I turn the lights on.
