| What are the Gangrel? | |||||||||||||||
| Called "Outlanders" by other Kindred, the Gangrel are the wanderers and nomads of Kindred society. They are a clan of survivors with no want or need for civilisation, and are as much at home on the road or in the wilds as in the city. In fact, most are more at home in the wilds. | |||||||||||||||
| This is not to say that some Gangrel do not live in the city or stay in the same place for long periods of time. Some Gangrel call the city home, though most that do live in parks or outside the city proper. Others will picks out a territory and put down stakes for a while. | |||||||||||||||
| They always picks their progeny very carefully, looking for those that can survive on their own. This is largely due to the fact that after embracing their child, they abandon them to make their own way in the world. Though the sire may watch his child from a distance, they almost never interfere. When the time is right, they present themselves to the fledgling and teach them the ways of the clan. | |||||||||||||||
| Because the Gangrel are essentially nomadic loners, who really acknowledge social niceties, it should come as no surprise that they have little in the way of clan organisation. They rarely assemble, and respect is only given to those who earned it through combat prowess or storytelling ability. | |||||||||||||||
| The Gangrel and the Oral Tradition | |||||||||||||||
| While Gangrel are almost antisocial to a fault, they are also avid storytellers. Therefore, when Gangrel do meet, tradition dictates that they share tales about what they have seen and heard. Like many nomadic cultures, this is how the Gangrel spread their lore, history, and keep each other informed. | |||||||||||||||
| While Gangrel are the storytellers of Kindred society, they are not it's gossips (that's the Toreador's job). Therefore, while embellishing a story is sometimes acceptable, it is considered the worst of bad form to tell an out right lie. | |||||||||||||||
| The Gangrel and the Lupines | |||||||||||||||
| Because of their tendency to travel, and live in the wilds, the Gangrel are the most likely to have contact with the Lupines (werewolves). And while this relationship is rarely one of friendship, the Gangrel have an easier time dealing with the them than do the other clans. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that the Gangrel have an easier time avoiding detection by the Lupines. In fact, some Gangrel have even managed to pass themselves off as a Garou (the term the Lupine's use to refer to each other) and learn some of their stories or something about their culture. While this is a very dangerous game to play, great honour and prestige is afforded to those who manage to pull it off. Also, while it doesn't offer as much prestige among the clan, some Gangrel take great pleasure by performing "cout coup" on the Garou. | |||||||||||||||
| The Gangrel and the Gypsies | |||||||||||||||
| The Gangrel are closely affiliated with the Gypsies, or the Rom (as they refer to themselves). In fact, it is said that the Gypsies are the mortal descendants of the Gangrel's founder and they are under his protection. Whether or not this is true Gangrel will never harm or embrace a Gypsy. Further, through long standing tradition, Gangrel are expected to aid the Gypsies whenever necessary. Due to these ties, not a few Gangrel have adopted much from the Gypsy culture, including mannerisms, linguistic elements, and even dress. | |||||||||||||||
| Also, while it has been established that Gypsies will sometimes aid Gangrel in return, their aid is not something that should be expected. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the Rom have a very insular culture. They don't trust outsiders, even when they are Gangrel. | |||||||||||||||
| Gangrel Clan Disciplines | |||||||||||||||
| Animalism | |||||||||||||||
| This collection of powers serves as a primal link between the Beast that lurks in the souls of all Kindred and the wild spirit of the natural order of things. Especially to the Gangrel, this Discipline represents the Kindred's ability to remain in touch with and understand their role in nature's vast scheme. | |||||||||||||||
| Fortitude | |||||||||||||||
| Fortitude is a type of supernatural toughness and vigour. While all Kindred possess an amazing constitution, supplemented by gradual regeneration and an immunity to aging and most diseases. Kindred with Fortitude possess an even greater dregree of toughness. | |||||||||||||||
| Protean | |||||||||||||||
| This Discipline allows a vampire to transform either her entire body or a part of her body into something non-human. The vampire can thus grow claws, meld into the earth, turn into a bat (or wolf), or even become mist. | |||||||||||||||
| Gangrel Clan Advantage | |||||||||||||||
| Gangrel rarely allow themselves to be tied down to one place for long, except when they feel there is some task or goal they must accomplish before moving on. As a result, few princes enforce the laws of Prestation upon the nomadic Gangrel. This is not to say that a prince cannot tell them to leave, but they rarely worry about seeking out the prince of every domain in which they wander. | |||||||||||||||
| Furthermore, when Gangrel deal with werewolves, they do not show the taint of the Wyrm. Only Gangrel who have three or more Beast Traits will bear the scent of the Wyrm (see Laws of the Wild). This is obviously of great advantage when dealing with the already unpredictable Garou. | |||||||||||||||
| Gangrel Clan Disadvantage | |||||||||||||||
| Each time the Beast (in the form of a Beast Trait-provoked frenzy) washes over a Gangrel, it leaves a mark of its passing in its wake. These marks take the form of animalistic features, like a hairy mane, pointed ears, or slitted pupils. The player should record these on her character sheet and include them in her description. For every three of these features she possesses, the character must take either Bestial or Repugnant as a Negative Social Trait. These Traits can and probably will be taken multiple times as the Kindred becomes more and more animalistic. | |||||||||||||||
