THE DRU NETWORK
SPOTLIGHT
1
You can't help it -- you have
to roll your eyes whenever you hear someone refer to an energetic
sort as a "firecracker" or a "pistol" these
days. Yet some how those descriptive terms can be applied to
Sisqo of Dru Hill fame without irony. In fact, they fit him like
a well-tooled pair of patent leather jeans. Coming on like a
one-man Vegas showstopper complete with neon lights, Roman
candles, and girls, girls, girls, Sisqo -- along with his Dru
partners Nokio, Woody, and Jazz -- brings a bold, theatrical
aesthetic to R&B that hearkens back to the days when James
Brown had to be revived from collapse onstage by the embrace of
his velvet cape. Ecstatic and electric, Sisqo's voice and
presence leapt out with such unbridled force that folks at home
thought he alone was Dru Hill.
Sisqo's
broken that curse with the release of his first solo album, the
very aptly titled "Unleash The Dragon," which has been
climbing toward platinum status since its late '99 release. The
first salvo from his group's Dru World Order venture with Def
Jam/Def Soul (as well as his own Dragon imprint), it'll be
followed by solo discs from Woody (who had left the group to
pursue a career in gospel and still maintains his place in Dru's
empire), Jazz, and then Nokio, who's also been busy with a number
of production projects, including "Unleash The Dragon"
and "What These Bitches Want," Sisqo's track with DMX
on "...And Then There Was X."
