THE GOODWINS IN ENGLAND

This Site is under construction!

My husband's family came from England originally, and we are currently back to the late 1700's with finding his ancestors, thanks to some research done for us by a very efficient English researcher!
As with most families, we have naming patterns which, in some sense, makes it harder to know who you are talking about, but in another sense makes it easier to find those ancestors who are more likely to be in your direct line! The two male names in this family that are quite prominent are George and Josiah, as you will see.

George and Elizabeth (Fletcher) Goodwin

GEORGE GOODWIN was born about 1785 in St. Ives, County Hunts, Huntingdon. I have not been able to find out any more about George, except that he married ELIZABETH FLETCHER, who was born in Crowland (also known as Croyland), Lincolnshire, on January 29, 1786. She died, also in Crowland, on July 14, 1871, and is listed in the 1871 census in the family of her son, Josiah.
There were two Elizabeth Flethcher's born in Crowland in the time period from 1786-1791, so the problem was to find which was the correct Elizabeth Fletcher. But our ancestors left us a clue! When George Goodwin married Elizabeth Flether, one of the witnesses at the marriage was a "Thomas Fletcher, Jnr". The Elizabeth Fletcher born to Thomas and Susanna had a brother Thomas, baptized 25 May, 1790, at Crowland, so it points to Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas and Susanna Fletcher, as being the correct one.
Their marriage took place in Crowland on September 26, 1811, in the parish church of St. Mary, St. Bartholomew and St. Guthlac.
They lived in Crowland during the years when their children were born, or at least when their son, Josiah, was born about 1820. I do not yet know the names of any of their other children.
