The Sims (Gamecube Version)

The Sims has always been a popular computer game. It has many expansions as well as the newer sequel, The Sims 2. Although many people enjoy playing The Sims 2 in many different ways, including on their PC, console, mobile or handheld, I have found that very few people are aware that the original version of the game was also released for Gamecube, Playstation 2, and XBox. I must admit that I find this fact rather upsetting. Ever since the console release of The Sims 2 the game on this platform has been getting a bad rap. However, the original version of the game is very well done and extremely addictive.

Although the three console versions of this game are basically the same, I feel the need to point out that I only own a Gamecube, and will be basing my opinions solely on that experience.

The Sims for Gamecube has included enough features to attract both new and old fans of this series. PC players will enjoy the added challenge of Get a Life mode, which is a mission based story game where you are in charge of one sim's life. Original series fans will also enjoy the improved graphics. Your favourite sims are now in full 3D. New fans, or players unable to play this game on their computer (such as myself) don't need to worry. Apart from Get a Life mode there's also classic Play the Sims mode, which is essentially the same game PC players know and love.

Get a Life mode must be completed in order for you to access Play the Sims mode (unless you know the cheat to unlock it, hint hint). During this game, you create a sim and begin by living in your mom's house. You are given a series of tasks, such as fixing the TV and getting a job, before being able to move onto the next "level" (moving out of mom's house and living on your own). The game progresses in this manner, and as you get promotions, make friends, and do other important (and unimportant) life tasks you move into bigger and better houses until you are retired and living in your dream house. Upon completion of the goals you are given you also unlock new items to decorate your sims' homes with, another feature new to the series.

Completing Get a Life mode unlocks Play the Sims mode, which is basically the same game PC owners around the world have grown to love. Simply put, Play the Sims is a sandbox mode. You are given a neighborhood with six lots in it. Some of the lots are empty, some have homes with families already living in them, and others just have prebuilt homes. These lots are yours to do what you wish. You can evict families, bulldoze homes, create your own family (with up to 4 sims in it) and move them in to any lot you wish, or build your own homes. There are hundreds of differnet objects, wallpapers, and flooring patterns you can use to decorate these homes with, inlcuding some items exclusive to the console versions. Once you get yourself established you can watch your sims as they move through life, including getting a job, getting married, having kids, or just hanging out with their friends. If that doesn't amuse you feel free to interfere. You can tell your sim when to go to the bathroom (or when not to if you'd like to see them have an accident), when to go to bed, when to eat, and basically run their lives for them. If you get tired of your sim feel free to send it to their death by having them fix something too challenging for them, or (my personal favourite) electricute them by having them come out of the hot tub and touch the bug zapper.

The Sims for Gamecube is a great game for new and old sim fans alike. It is one of the few that I would recommend to anyone, whether they played the PC version or not. This game is a classic and if you haven't played it you are definitely missing out on something.
