temperature The temperature of a body determines the direction of heat flow with its surroundings. If the body is at higher temperature compared to its surroundings, then heat will flow out of the body, while if the body is at lower temperature then heat will flow into the body. In the kinetic interpretation of temperature the average kinetic energy possessed by molecules of the system is proportional to the temperature. See also second law of thermodynamics.
