Le Chatelier principle If any constraint is applied to a system in chemical equilibrium, the equilibrium is shifted in such a way to annul or tend to annul the constraint. Consider for example the reaction

N2 + 3H2 ® 2NH3

Increase in pressure favours the reaction in the forward direction, because the volume of ammonia is half the volume of nitrogen and hydrogen.
