| Isn't SI Spanish For Yes |
Have you ever had a fight with a friend about how far away their house is? He say it's 12, but you just drove it and you KNOW it's 19. After swearing off your friendship and driving home, you realize both of you were right. He was talking in miles and you were talking in kilometers. This happens to scientists too, and that is why they developed a system known as SI This stands for "System International" which basically means the system everyone, everywhere should use. It regulates the measurements that scientists use, so when they compare data, they don't need to constantly be converting numbers to see if the different numbers they have are really equivalent.
SI units -time is measured in seconds (s) -distance is measured in meters (m) -mass is measured in kilograms (kg)
Of course, more things are measured than just these three, but often new units are derived from them, for example, speed is measured in m/s. Prefixes can also be added to the SI units depending on the magnitude of what is being measured. |
