When the Apple Fell
So Newton wasn't actually sitting under a tree with a bump on his head from when he was discovering amazing physics ideas, but his ideas are still relevant!
Newton's First Law
An object that doesn't have anything affecting its motion, ie: a force, the object's velocity is constant.
Let's say Tobin is just watching a baseball roll (on a frictionless surface of course). Is there a force acting on the ball? No!
Newton's Second Law
The acceleration depends on the force over a mass, or the idea that a force is a product of mass and acceleration.
So now Tobin kicks the baseball and it accelerates at 3.00 m/s and the ball weighs 0.5 kg. What force had Tobin applied?
Newton's Third Law
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. When Tobin pushes the ball with his foot, the ball pushes back on his foot with the same amount of force, just in the opposite direction. However, only the forces that Tobin's foot exerts on the ball influences the ball's acceleration.
