7.  Course Proposal (1997), SJSU Physics OUTREACH Workshop (PHYS 196R).

This course was designed to work twofold.  First, the student benefits

from a hands-on education of physics principles, which then must be

assimilated and communicated clearly to grade school students (K-12).

The training forces the student to learn physics via teaching physics.

Second, the participating grade schools benefit by receiving a free, high

      quality science show.

·         Extracurricular Activities:

2007-present

The SJ-based R & B group Jeff Jones and The Professors perform for a local children’s shelter. Currently, I am auditioning local musicians for

a new R & B group with singer Jeff Jones. I play James Jamerson-style P-bass in this group. I also volunteer for the shelter under the

supervision of Jeff Jones.

2005-present

The SF-based flamenco/N African group Garnada forms, in which I play flamenco guitar, Carles Benavent-style flamenco bass, cajon,

dhumbek, palmas, and assorted percussion.

2002-present

The trio "Thornapple" and duet "The Incredible Shrinking Band" perform at Borders Books.  In 2004, Thornapple releases a 10 song

CD called “Two Days”. In 2006, Thornapple releases a 12 song CD called “Drawbridge”. Both are engineered by me.

2000-2004:

Founding Board member of Parallel World Music, LLC.  The CD

release, "Silk Road" is unveiled.  The self-produced

album (which includes 4 of my compositions) is engineered by me.

Silk Road performs from 1997 – 2000 regularly at local Borders Bookstores.

The group officially disbands along with the LLC in 2004.

1999 - 2002:

Research Advisor at SJSU.  The Sonoluminescence Project was brought

over from New Mexico, to be studied further by interested students in

the Physics Department at SJSU.  I serve as the Faculty Advisor for the

group.  If all goes well, there may be a publication in the near future.

1998 - 2002:

Faculty Coordinator for Bad Science Movie Nights.  The science fiction

film is shown at either Evergreen Valley College or SJSU, and discussion

of the improper display of science follows.

1997 - present:

Faculty Advisor, Math and Science Club, Evergreen Valley

Community College, San Jose, CA.  Originally the MASTEP Math & Science Club, I started the club to meet the

demands of students interested in the math and sciences.  Activities

have included forums on teaching, whale watching expeditions, monarch

butterfly tours, camping trips, and a tour of Ames Research Center.  As

of December 1999, there were 49 student members.

1997 - 2002:

Webpage designer, SJSU Physics OUTREACH Workshop.  The web page

(currently being rebuilt) housed animations of physics demos and

explained how each one worked.  By the way, it has been noted that I

was the first instructor in the SJSU Physics Department to successfully

use the web as an integral part of the PHYS96L lecture (1996).

1997 - 2006:

Participant, Semiannual Faculty Talent Showcase, Evergreen Valley Community

College, San Jose, CA.  Vocal/percussion performance included an

original computer music composition and a flamenco guitar composition.

1997 - 2006:

Participant, St. Andrews Day, Evergreen Valley College.  I supplied percussion

backdrops for musical performences on recorder by Georgiana Rudge.

1995 - 2002:

Coordinator, Physics OUTREACH Program at SJSU.  The Physics OUTREACH

Program brings physics and related sciences to local grade schools

(K-12) via hands-on presentations.  The Program also participated in

the annual Physics Day at Paramount's Great America, along with the

annual science fair at Alex Anderson Elementary School.  I have also

been recruiting members of MASTEP EVC to help at these functions as well.

1993- 2004:

Bassist, flautist, cajonador, percussionist, flamenco guitarist and vocalist for

Bay Area flamenco pop group "Silk Road."

1993 - present:

Member/Founder, The Weasles.  The Weasles are a collection of SJSU

Physics Department alumni who also happen to be proficient

improvisational musicians.  The original group made some recordings,

which were sold through the club to raise money for a Christmas

charity.  The group plans to make more recordings in the near future.

1991 - present:

Volunteer Tutor, SJSU Physics Department.  Even now, I find the time

between labs to aid students in understanding concepts in physics.

1991 - present:

Faculty Participant of Liquid Seminar.  The Liquid Seminar is an

informal gathering of students and faculty from the SJSU Physics

Department on Friday evenings.  It is a time when students can

interact with their professors and discuss physics, metaphysics,

philosophy, and campus life without the traditional faculty/student

boundaries.  An exotic ethnic dinner location is chosen, followed by a

return to campus to continue discussions.

1996 - 1997:

Editor, LASELOG newsletter.  The Lasers And Secondary Education

(LASE) program was initiated by Dr. Gareth Williams.  LASELOG was a

nationwide circulated publication of articles written by high school

      students involved in laser applications.

1995 - 1997:

President, SJSU Physics Club.  I was the first to hold a two-year term in

the history of the club.  Besides planning field trips to science museums,

I made the Physics OUTREACH program an integral part of the club,

and provided the members with a comfortable clubroom atmosphere

complete with air conditioning, sofas, and a dartboard.

1995 - 1997:

Sound Engineer, The Flamenco Society of San Jose.

Cajonador, The Flamenco Society of San Jose.  The cajon is a percussion

instrument used in modern flamenco.  I designed and built my own

cajon, and my unique playing technique (which allows me to change

the pitch of the drum while playing with both hands) has been personally

approved by flamenco guitar maestro Paco De Lucia.

1991 - 1995:

Editor, Background Radiation newsletter.  Background Radiation was a

published forum for the SJSU Physics Club.  It included articles on offbeat

science, club events, comics, and student prose and poetry.
