Jesus in Islam

This web page is intended to correct some of the misconceptions that non-Muslim Americans have regarding Islam. All to often it is assumed that Islam has a different God that Jews and Christians and that Islam wishes Muslims to force people, such as Christians, to become Muslims. It is a fact of Islam that Muslims consider Jesus to be the Messiah. However Muslims have a whole different opinion of what the Messiah is.

Is the God of Islam the same as the God of Judeo-Christianity? In the book Ways to the Center - Sixth Ed., by
Denise L. Cormody & T.L. Brink, Thomas Advantage Books, (2006). The chapter on Islam starts on page 299 and in the very first paragraph states

Islam is an Arabic word that means "submission, surrender" (to the will of Allah, God). Muslim is another Arabic word, this one meaning "one who submits," in other words, a follower of Islam. Muslims understand this God to whom they are submitting to be the same God described in Genesis and to whom Jesus Prayed.

From Mohammed: The Man and His faith, by Tor Adrae

(page 25) Arabic-speaking Jews and Christians also used Allah as the name for God for their monotheistic God.

(page 25) Allah is a contraction of ai-ilah; and the name denotes simply 'the God'.

See http://www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/allah.html

and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God ("Alla" is the Arabic word for God)

From the Quran

Surah 11:136 - We believe in the revelation made by Allah to Abraham, Ishmael, Jacob, Moses and Jesus and all Prophets and we make no distinction between them.

Surah 109:6 - To you your religion and to me mine.

Surah 2:256 - Let there be no compulsion in religion.

Surah 57:21 - Be foremost in seeking forgiveness

Surah 3:133 - Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord

Surah 3:134 - Restrain in anger and pardon men

Surah 42:37 - When they are angry, even then forgive.

Islam Today: A Short Introduction to the Muslim World, by Akbar S. Ahmed

(page 25) - ... the Quran goes out of its way to emphasize that Christians and Jews - the people of the Book - are to be treated with special respect.

(page 25) - While Islam continues and incorporates Christianity and Judaism ...

(page 31) - The Quran explains that one of God's days may be like a thousand years (Surah 22:47) or fifty thousand years (Surah 70:4)

(page 84) - The Quran says Muslims must respect others so that they in turn will respect muslims.
