Area 51

Back to Physics World

    Ah yes! Area 51, Groom Lake, Hangar 18. Its amazing how much people love to dream of these places! Rumor has it that the government has alien bodies stored there as well as alien spacecraft. The basis for such claims seems to be very very weak if not merely non-existent. It appears that the base was chosen for its remoteness, to keep prying eyes from seeing what they were not supposed to see. It is said that the U2 and SR-71 spy planes were developed and tested there. It is well known that the F-117 Stealth Fighter was tested there as well.

The question about secrecy keeps popping up in that the government, in trying too hard to keep the purpose of the base secret, has actually drawn more attention to it and as such has given foreign governments a strong motive to keep the base under close watch. The government has even denied its existence for a very long time, only admitting its existence due to a pending law suit being filed against the government for burning hazardous waste there and thus causing a base worker to contract cancer. It is wondered why the government denied its existence for so long, especially since it was in plain sight. Even today satellites are flying over it taking photographs of the base. Are the people in charge so stupid as to keep this base so mysterious? Why not simply admit what is common knowledge anyway, i.e. that the base supports the testing of experimental aircraft and, perhaps, other highly classified operations? The common assumption is that the government is full of stupid people. While I'm sure there are very stupid people working for Uncle Sam (and I've met some in my day!) I highly doubt that the decision to maintain the status quo in regards to its absolute secrecy was made by idiots. Think of it in these terms; If a government wanted to keep a base totally secret then the best way to do that is to provide a diversion. If Area 51 is actually such a diversion and there is another secret base which is well hidden and then few people will know where to begin looking for it and perhaps will never start looking because they are too focused on Area 51.
    Let us not forget good ole Bob Lazar. This person claims to be a graduate of MIT (for all we know he got a BA in basket weaving) but there is no evidence of his ever attending classes there. There are no class photos of him in year books, although Lazar claims steps were taken to hide his attendance. That is clearly an idiotic claim. Hiding something like that is clearly impossible. Lazar claims that he has proof that he worked at Area 51 from 1987 to 1988. He has a 1987 W2 stub which shows he received an in income from US Naval Intelligence for the year 1987. However the amount is little more than $900. If he was paid the minimum salary then he worked there at most two weeks during that year. He does not show a W2 for the following year. There is a  video on his website that is supposed to be a test flight of a flying disc. Below are a few frames from the beginning of the video file;

Take a close look at the red lines drawn in these pictures. The line starts at the shadow cast by the edge of the disk and passes through the part of the disk which is close to the portion which is casting the shadow. Since these pictures are three successive images of the disc merely rising about the ground then the red lines should be parallel since the light rays coming from the Sun are, for all practical purposes, parallel. However this is not the case for the red lines which are actual lines which are drawn in the pictures. The red lines converge to a point which is off to the upper right hand side of the photo. This means that the source of light casting the shadow is not the Sun but a point source. This is strong evidence that the video is a fraud! Sorry for exposing you Bob!

Note: Bob Lazar was contacted by E-mail for comment but no response has been received from him as of yet.
