An elementary derivation of E = mc2, Fritz Rohrlich, Am. J. Phys. 58(4), April 1990
The equality E = mc2 is derived in a fashion suitable for the presentation in an elementary physics course for nonscience majors. It assumes only 19th century physics and knowledge of the photon.
