While some land fills burn excess gas with flares, and thus waste a potential energy source, over 325 landfills in the United States have landfill gas utilization projects. These projects collect the gas (mostly methane) and use it to create energy. Seventy additional projects are currently under construction. The EPA estimates that there are over 700 more landfill in the United States that could support landfill gas energy projects cost effectively. This would produce enough electricity to power over three million homes. |
