Field Lines, Hand Rules and Lenz's Law
Lab 1 - Magnetic Field Lines

1) Go to the following web page:
http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/electromag/java/magneticlines/index.html
The simulation gives some indication of how magnetic field lines would be set up in this situation. Sketch the direction of the magnetic field lines.

2) Go to the following web page:
http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/electromag/java/magneticlines2/index.html
The simulation shows the interaction of two poles. Sketch the direction of the magnetic field lines for two like poles and for two opposite poles.

3) The convention for direction of magnetic field lines is out of the north, into the south. How would magnetic field lines flow inside a magnet?

4) You may also wish to view the following pages on magnetism:
http://okaw.fayette.k12.il.us/electronics/mmab/magne2.htm
  and
http://okaw.fayette.k12.il.us/electronics/mmab/flux2~1.htm

To be handed in: A sketch of the direction of the magnetic field lines for 1) and 2). Answer for 3).
Lab 2 - Left Hand Rules

1) Open the following page:
http://okaw.fayette.k12.il.us/electronics/mmab/eleca2.htm
This page gives the first left hand rule.

2) Try the quiz on the following page:
http://okaw.fayette.k12.il.us/electronics/mmab/quiz.htm

3) Go to the following web site:
http://www.cyberclassrooms.net/~pschweiger/magnetism.html
Re-state the hand rules so that they take into account electron flow, not conventional current.

4) Go to the following web site:
http://www.sciencejoywagon.com/physicszone/lesson/08magnet/solenoid/index.htm
On the above site, open the following pages:
The amount of current in the wire.
The number of "turns" of wire.
The magnetic "permeability" of the core.
Make sure you understand what is happening in the simulation - use left hand rule to confirm the direction of the magnetic field in each simulation. Note that normal convention tells us that magnetic field lines flow out of north, into south. Inside an electromagnet, this is not the case - what happens inside an electromagnet.

5) Go to the following site:
http://www.cyberclassrooms.net/~pschweiger/APhandrules.html
Answer questions 1 to 6

6) Last task: Go to the following site:
http://home.a-city.de/walter.fendt/phe/lorentzforce.htm
Is this a correct representation according to the third left hand rule? What's wrong? Explain.

To be handed in from this lab:
                                            Quiz for 2);
                                            Restatement of hand rules  3);
                                            Questions 1-6, from 5); and
                                            Answer for 6)
Lab 3 - Lenz's Law

1) Open the following page:
http://www.cyberclassrooms.net/~pschweiger/APlenzlaw.html
Do all questions.
