She showed him how to layer the items that he had gotten, and the proper way to hold his sword.  She wished she had more time to spend with him, but she really had to get to the Adventurers Guild.  She knew that there were a few more pieces of armor in the donation halls that would be a benefit to the boy, and he could really use a few rudimentary lessons in sword fighting, but she just didnt have the time right then.  And that was the problemshe never had the time.  After bestowing on him a few defensive spells to protect him for a little while at least, she said her goodbyes to the lad, and continued on to the center of town.

Once she had gotten to the guild she tried her best to mediate between the two sides, but like always, each could only think of eradicating the other.  And that was the inherent problemthat is all that each thought about the other.  Neither side would be happy until the other was defeated.  Nothing she or any of the Guardians could do would ever really change that.  They were trying to put out a forest fire with a cup of water.

Each side left the guild throwing last insults at each other, leaving Phyre to sit alone by the massive stone fireplace.  It was then that Gelltor, Phyres husband, came into the hall.  He had some spare time from his Knighthood duties and had come in search of his wife.  He could tell by the set of her shoulders and the look in her eyes that all had not gone as she had hoped it might.  He made his way over to the couch and sat down beside her.  He draped an arm around her shoulders and she laid her head down upon his shoulder.

I am guessing that all did not go well this morning. Gelltor said to his wife as he kissed the side of her head.  No, my love, it did not.  Though to be honest, in my heart, I knew that it would not end amicably between those two.  No matter what I said or did.  Phyre let out a little sigh.  Gelltor could only nod in agreement.

I know what we can do. Gelltor said, We can go up into the Green Reaches and have a picnic lunch, I just happen to have one with me!  Phyre smiled at her husband.  He had known exactly how this meeting was going to end, and he knew that she would be unhappy about its outcome.  He had planned to come and cheer her up, and she loved him with all her heart for that.  She leaned in and gave Gelltor a tender kiss and said, Yes, a picnic sounds wonderful!

Gelltor stood and offered his hand to his wife to help her stand, then they made their way out the guild to his waiting horse.  He helped Phyre up into the saddle then climbed up himself, and they started up the road, and out the Northern Gates into the Green Reaches.

Before they were to eat their lunch they agreed to visit the grave of Zendel, their goddess beloved husband, and lay some wildflowers they had picked on the way at the tombstone.  It was on the way to the grave that Phyre heard the sounds of fighting.  Gelltor heard it then also and turned the horse to the northwest in the direction of the clamor.

As they left the trees and came to a small clearing, Phyre saw a sight that made her cry out in sorrow.  As one hobgoblin watched, another was just pulling his sword out from the chest of the same young lad that Phyre had stopped to help in town just that morning.  In anger, Phyre made a magic missile, one in each hand and cast them at the hobgoblins, striking each one in the chest and killing them instantly.  She then dropped down to the ground and ran over to the body of the boy.  When she reached him she saw that he was already dead.  She scooped the boy into her arms, and cradled him to her, rocking back and forth in anguish.

She could not help but think that if she had taken the time to help him when she could, instead of rushing off to mediate a fight she had no hopes of ever ending, the boy would still be alive.  She made a silent plea that begged whoever was listening to forgive her for ignoring her heart and not helping those that needed her teaching and guidance, and made a promise that from that day forward she and all the Guardians would take that goal on.  They would become the Guardians of the Young Adventurers and give them the knowledge and help them gain the experience they needed to survive in the world.

As a single tear left Phyres eye and fell onto the slain child, a shimmering cloud of pixie dust swirled into being in front of them.  Phyre laid the boy down gently onto the ground and rose to stand next to her husband as the Goddess Jae emerged from the cloud.  After the sudden shock that an immortal had come to be standing in front of them, Phyre and Gelltor bowed in respect to the goddess.  Jae gave a slight nod of her head in reply and then spoke to Phyre.

Your prayers have been heard, Desert Rose, and your heart was deemed to be true in your desires.  It has been agreed upon that you shall be elevated to the level of Sage, so that you may fully execute your lifes new direction.  Jae passed her hand in front of Phyre and spoke a few words, and a light began to glow around Phyre.  Gelltor began to move as if to aid his wife, but Jae stopped him with the promise that Phyre was not being injured.  As quickly as the glow came, it then disappeared.  Your transformation is now complete, Desert Rose, may you use your new powers to fulfill your hearts desire. Said Jae as she stepped back into another cloud of pixie dust and disappeared.

Gelltor quickly then went to his wifes side and satisfied himself that she was in fact all right.  Phyre could feel the change that had come over her.  And she was elated.  She now knew that she had a new goal in life.  She was going to spend the rest of her days helping the young prepare for the world around them, so hopefully the events of today would never again be repeated.
