Mimic A Pre-exam Obsession 19 November 1997 Wednesday. Just a day before exam and I feel really suicidal -- in a studying sense. An intense lethargy has overcome me. I want to watch a movie. Mimic is the name. I've been contemplating about it for, what, days? So, in the morning, when I found out mom has dropped the car and instead took the commuter to work, I naturally decided, what the heck. I'm going! This pre-exam obsessions are quite common with me. I've got certain obsessions at certain times, so go figure. So, at around 12 pm, I drove to Sunway pyramid. I got there in the nick of time. Using my card, I got a $2 discount. The Movie….kewl! I hate those clicking noises. I sure appreciate them killing the cockroaches, but when they grew too big….'shit hanging on the walls', the return of Josh Brolin (!) and lots of ugly insects. Oh, and the 'man' disguises that the insects use…kewl! The Story Mimic stars Mira Sorvino of Leaving Las Vegas fame (I think) and the guy who stared as Mr. Knightly in Emma (Jeremy Northam). The children of New York are dying from a strange disease from which cockroaches are carriers. Desperate, Dr. Susan Tyler (Sorvino) creates a new breed of insects, nicknamed the 'Judas breed' that eats them cockroaches alive. Well needless to say, those cockroaches died, NY is safe. So they think. Well, zip 6 months away. We see a tall guy in a trenchcoat drag a The Review Hey, I'm an easy reviewer, so I'm going to say this a great movie- if you need to release tension or simply bored out of your mind. In other words, a great movie for relaxation. Or stress. Depends on how you look at it. This whole movie is heavy on shock quality. No deep moral dilemmas here except the fact that Dr. Tyler's Judases has become her Frankenstein and she has to destroy them. I love the claustrophobia of the whole show. The sense of entrapment, and the tense scene at the end where they had to complete a task in order to escape the tunnels with a train. Which is odd…because towards the end, they didn't use the end, so the deaths that resulted seem almost a wasted effort. There 's also a scene where they had to rub insect innards on themselves in order to fool the insects into believing that they are one of them. Gosh, there's one scene where Northam's character was fixing some cables and an insect suddenly appeared beside him (and them buggers are huge) and casually sauntered past him like any Judas would. Gosh, when he sighed and rubbed himself with the innards further, I can only applaud. A predictable ending, although I didn't exactly expect Northam's character to live. I applaud that. I hate tragedies. Moral dillemas aside, this is a well crafted thriller but its no Aliens . It's a Relic done in a different environment. The Star described it as a 'Seen one, seen 'em all' "Mimic emerges out of its cocoon as a stylish B-grade movie with A-list actors" I beg to differ. More like A-. It's a good romp. Give it some credit! All I wished however, was a chance to see it with some friends, but unfortunately, some people had more sense than I. To see a movie on the eve of a difficult exam! By the way, I took Media Planning the next day and I think I got clobbered. I got so nervous during the exam that Iwent to toilet because of a stomach ache. Plus, I forgot my calculator. Mimic must have jarred me more than I thought! ? The Verdict: ???? That's for cheering me up before MP exam!
