Teacher Interviews

This survey was given to three teachers who were in an ED 503 class I took during June 2000.  The class was “Publishing to the World Wide Web”.  I asked them to complete the survey at the end of this class.

Thank you for completing this survey!

As you can see from the answers marked by the three teachers, they do not find it easy to learn technology on their own.  They believe that technology would enhance their classroom activities but have not been able to introduce anything new into their classes this past year.  There is concern that their students actually know more about technology than they do, even though all of the teachers teach at the elementary level.  We all know how busy teachers are, and yet they are willing to devote their time to learning more about technology.  There is definitely a sense among the three teachers that they are not equipped to utilize technology in the classroom.

The three teachers strongly agreed that more teacher training and support is necessary to integrate technology.  Two of the teachers strongly agreed that they enjoy collaborating with other teachers and like to learn with a small team.  I was surprised that the third teacher expressed a strong disagreement to collaborating, but she strongly agreed to learning best in a small team.  They all strongly agreed that they learn best one-on-one.  All of the teachers are excited about the technology they have seen and using it with their students.  They realize they have a lot more to learn.  They see technology as an opportunity for personal, professional development.  All of the teachers felt that staff development should take place during school hours.  They were divided about having staff development after school hours, but they all strongly disagreed to planning staff development on weekends.  They were all in agreement that teachers should have the opportunity to choose the type of staff development offered to them.

The teachers all believe that technology can accelerate student achievement, enhance multidisciplinary learning activities, and provide opportunity to students to be engaged in real world problems.  They believe technology allows their students to be active, independent learners.

The conclusions I would draw from this survey are:

1)             Teachers feel inadequately prepared to utilize technology in the classroom.

2)             Teachers want to learn more about technology and are willing to devote their time to learn it.

3)             Teachers see technology as a valuable tool for students and their classrooms.

4)             Teachers believe they need more support and training with technology.

5)             Teachers believe that staff development should be offered during school hours

6)             Teachers want more opportunities to collaborate with other teachers.

7)             Teachers believe they learn best in small teams or one-on-one.

8)             Teachers want to choose the types of staff development offered to them.
