Introduction to PowerPoint
 

 

 


Learn the basics of PowerPoint and how to create dynamic slideshow presentations.  This 3-hour workshop is designed for teachers of all grade levels and administrators who are relatively new to the use of PowerPoint but are familiar with word processing.  We will be using an on-line tutorial from Chalksoft’s On-line Academy.  Participants will learn the step-by-step basics of constructing a six-slide presentation.

Instructional uses of PowerPoint:

o       On-screen slideshow presentations

o       Web presentations

o       Overhead transparencies

o       Instructional notes

o       Student-directed learning modules

o       Student presentations

 

PowerPoint toolbars:

o       Position the pointer on top of a button to see its name

o       Many tools similar to other Microsoft applications

o       Additional tools available by clicking the down arrowhead

o       PowerPoint automatically customizes your toolbar when you use a tool repeatedly or don’t use a tool for a while

 

Constructing slides:

o       Use a template for the title slide

o       Choose Blank Presentation for additional slides to avoid a “canned” look

o       Change Slide View to accomplish different tasks

ü      Work on presentation content, layout, and notes concurrently in Normal View

ü      Enter and edit text in the Outline View

ü      Modify slide content and enhance a slide’s appearance in Slide View

ü      Rearrange and add special effects to your slides in Slide Sorter View

ü      Watch your slideshow in Slide Show view

 

Text and Graphics:

o       Limit each slide to six words per line and six lines per slide

o       Use lists and symbols to prioritize your points

o       Text should provide highlights, put details in notes

o       Choose graphics from the Clip Gallery, find them on-line, or use a scanner

o       Highlighting and dragging on the corner can change the size of a graphic

o       Right click in slide then choose Ruler to display rulers that help you align objects

o       Right click in slide then choose Guide to display slide quadrants

 

Editing:

o       Rearrange slides in the slide sorter view by selecting and dragging slide to new position

o       Delete a slide by selecting it in the outline pane, the slide sorter view or the slide view, click edit and then click Delete Slide

Setting up the slideshow:

o       Choosing Slide Show, then Slide Transition sets slideshow timing and transitions

o       Choosing Apply to All applies the transition effects to all of the slides

o       To view show, select the first slide and then the Slide Show tool

 

Additional features to investigate on your own:

o       Animations

o       Sound

o       Video

o       Charts and graphs

o       Tables

o       Slide headers and footers

o       Drawing

Producing your own slideshow presentation:     

o       Determine the purpose of your presentation            

o       Determine the audience and location                                            

o       Determine the look you want your presentation to have               

ü      Keep design simple

ü      Keep design consistent throughout your presentation

ü      Choose attractive colors that make slides easy to read        

ü      Use visuals to communicate your message

o       Determine the message you want to communicate

ü      Keep your message focused

ü      Be concise

ü      Choose fonts that are easy to read

ü       Emphasize important text
