| Keiser-Jenkins, Karen. "InView, Formerly Emory Vision, Release Five-Year Data on LASIK Surgery; Findings Demonstrate Long-Term Results of LASIK." Business Wire: 12 Feb 2004. <http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newId=20040 212005092&newsLang=en> The article that I chose to write a summary on shows the results and statistics from an FDA clinical trial conducted in 1995 by InView. InView is the leader in eye correction surgery and is based in Atlanta, GA. It was founded in 1994 by faculty of the Emory Medical School. They have done over 40, 000 LASIK surgeries in the past. In 1995, Dr. Waring, Dr. Carr, and Dr. Thompson conducted a clinical trial with 267 patients to find out more about LASIK surgery. "The results showed 73 percent of patients reported seeing the same or less glare, 52 percent reported the same or less halo, and 79 percent reported the same or lessgohst images" (Keiser-Jenkins 1). Five years later, a follow up survey was composed of a questionaire in which 149 of the 267 patients participated. The results came out even better than the initial survey from before. 95% of the patients said that they were satisfied or highly satisfied. Post-operative symptoms such as halos, glares, and ghost images were also down a great deal. It states, 63% said they did not have any glare and 62% had no halos at all. All in all it was found in the survey that the LASIK procedure extremely helped vision and the quality of life. |

| 4 March 2004. <http://howstuffworks.com> I got my article from the website HowStuffWorks.com. The article is about the basic structure of the eye and why or why not someone would need laser eye surgery. I am also using the article on lasers to help my group get a better understanding of how a laser actually works. The article on the eye will help my group and I to understand what exactly the operation entails, from what the doctors do and what the laser does to how the patient reacts to the operation. I believe these articles will be a critical part of our web site and it will help the audience have a better grasp on what lser surgery involves. |
