The main "physics related" part of LASIK eye surgery is the laser itself. Our society has been using lasers for many years now. Laser technology is the driving force for Compact Discs (CD's), we use lasers to read information that is writen onto a CD, such as the lasers in music players and computer drives. |

Lasers have also been used to cut hard materials such as metal and diamonds. Light is concentrated into a super high intensity beam of light which is capable of penetrating even the hardest of elements. Before lasers were used diamond smiths would use ultra hard saws to cut; this was a tedeous process that was often times unaccurate and sloppy. Lasers offer an extremely precise cut in less time, which allows for more accurate and detailed cuts. |

Recently ,with societies obsession with beauty and youth, lasers have been used in cosmetic surgery to reform and reshape people's bodies. Lasers are used in some operations to destroy the first few layers of skin allowing fresh skin to be exposed, creating a more youthfull and healthy apperance. Proceedures like these are often times painfull and require an extensive recovery process, but the desire to alter ones apperance takes priority over the pain and ridiculous price. |

With the recent military activities of the US, our military has been experimenting with lasers on the battlefield. Currently the military is using lasers for range finders, target designators and guidence systems. Bombers and tanks are equipped with laser targeting systems which they use to precisly locate enemy targets, allowing for almost perfect accuracy. This reduces casualties and unwanted death while improving our range and accuracy. As laser technology keeps progressing there is no doubt that the military will start to include lasers in more and more battlefield applications. |

Obviously, lasers have had a major impact on our society so far; as laser technology continues to make lasers more affordable and portable there will be a growth in the presence of lasers in our society. From the delicate job of LASIK eye surgery to the destructive power of our military lasers will be on the cutting edge of technology and what is to come is something straight out of a science-fiction story. |
