8th Grade Health: Personal Growth Students in Grade 8 Health examine how personal health is influenced by the choices and decisions people make.  Time is spent learning a foundation decision-making model and then applying it to several areas of personal health including building healthy relationships, nutrition, growth and development, preventing disease, and substance abuse.  Mrs. Marhelewicz
 

Skills for Action Open to students in grades 9 and 10, this course helps students work towards becoming responsible, healthy, caring youth. Time is spent learning the skills required to respond to emergency situations as well as to friends in need. Standard responding skills as well as CPR and accident prevention information are taught in the First Aid unit. Students also receive information on many of the current health issues facing teens today and practice skills for reaching out and helping others. An update on HIV/AIDS is part of this course. Life Management  Open to students in grades 10 and 11. Students look at aspects of living independently. Topics include career exploration and life-style choices, money management, environmental health concerns, personal fitness, and making wise consumer choices.  Mrs. Marhelewicz and Ms. Nolen-Parkhouse

 

Family and Community Health  Open to students in grades 11 and 12. Students consider the problems of growing into adulthood.  Topics include the changing American Family, family relationships, dating and marriage, sexual development and health care issues, community health and disease prevention, parenting issues, and dealing with family crisis.  Ms. Nolen-Parkhouse

 

Trends and Issues in Health and Wellness Open to students in grades 11 and 12. Through readings, research and discussions, students examine how Americans make choices about controlling their health, the impact of stress and emotions on mental health, the effects of diet and nutrition on well-being, influences of exercise and diet on health, the impact of drugs on our lives, research on human reproduction and sexuality, major causes of death in the Western world, the current state of health care in today's society, food labeling and food and drug interactions, and hazards that affect our health.
