A self-explanatory section, here
I will attempt to eventually cover all of the characters in the DragonBall series. The major
ones are listed immediately below with short summaries of each. The alphabeticized
index at the top of the site is currently under construction, so there are not too many options to
choose from yet in that area. However, there is a good amount of information already here, so
enjoy!

Name: Buu [Variations: Fat Buu, Majin Buu, Thin Buu, Kid Buu, Ultimate Buu, Mr. Buu, Ubuu]
Gender: Male
Created/Resides: Earth/Earth (Mr. Buu and Ubuu)
Race: Magical being/Demon
Family: Bibidi [Creator]
Words of Wisdom: BUU!!!
|
Summary:
During his stint in the DragonBall
series, Buu's personality and form change a number of times: he's fat and thin, good, evil, and
in-between, and a number of other things. He was created five thousand years ago by the
evil sorcerer Bibidi and unleashed upon the universe. The five gods of the universe, the
Kaioshins, attempted to stop him, but three were killed and one was absorbed before Buu was finally
defeated by the West Kaioshin, who imprisoned Buu in a capsule and sent to Earth. A note here:
when Buu absorbed the one Kaioshin (Dai Kaioshin), he also inherited his attributes, and so became
Fat Buu. The Kaioshin within him also caused him to become slightly more kind-hearted than
otherwise probable. In the Buu saga of DragonBall Z, the descendant of Bibidi, Babidi, summons
Fat Buu once again for dark purposes.
Fat Buu appears during the Tenkaichi Budoukai,
and after two thugs shoot Mr. Satan in the heart, results in the creation of a being that is
pure evil in addition to the existing Fat Buu - Thin Buu. Thin Buu absorbs Fat Buu, and now Super Buu is formed.
Fat Buu's good influence is very decreased in this new form, and a much more powerful and evil
persona defines Super Buu. He absorbs Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo in this form.
Then he absorbs Gohan, boosting him up yet another level, and becoming Kid (or Ultimate) Buu.
This version is completely devoid of emotion, and bent on causing pain and suffering to all
around him. His lack of remorse causes him to fight with his full potential, and makes
him a deadlier adversary than Super Buu. It is his picture that you see on this profile.
He is finally killed after Vegetto (Vegeta and Goku fused) enters his body and frees Fat Buu,
Gohan, Goten, and Piccolo, reverting him back to Majin Buu form. He is destroyed by a
Genki Dama (Spirit Bomb) from Goku. Fat Buu renames himself Mr. Buu and settles down to a
life without causing too much mischief (except rigging the Tenkaichi Budoukai for a number of years
for Mr. Satan).
Goku uses the DragonBalls to wish
for a human, good-hearted reincarnation of Majin Buu, and the wish is granted. This is
Ubuu, who faces Goku at the 28th Tenkaichi Budoukai. Impressed by his power, Goku takes him off to train him, and he reappears as a noteworthy character in DragonBall
GT.

Name: Cell [Variations: Imperfect Cell, Mutant Cell, Perfect Cell]
Gender: N/A
Created/Resides: Earth/Deceased
Race: Bio-mechanical android
Family: Dr. Gero [Creator]
Words of Wisdom: "His ignorance is painful."
|
Summary:
Cell is in a sense the "ultimate"
android. He was the crowning achievement of Dr. Gero, but Dr. Gero never had the chance to
see him because he was dead by the time Cell arrived in the past. Cell was created by Dr. Gero before
the other androids took shape, but was much too complicated to be finished in a reasonable amount of
time. Because of this, Cell is left to Dr. Gero's master computer to finish, and is not
finished for 20 years after the arrival of the other Androids. He was created by utlizing cells
from all of the strongest warriors ever to visit earth together to form a being with all of their
attributes. As a result, his array of abilities is the largest in the series, with Goku coming
in second.
Cell was also made to combine with Androids 17 and 18 to become complete.
Each of his mergers gives him a new form and appearance. He began as a purple egg that hatched
to become a sort of insectoid creature. From this, he shed his skin and developed into
his first real form, which still looks like a bug but has a more humanoid shape. Merging
with Android 17 turns him into what can be called Mutant Cell, who is heavyset with a type
of mouth that resembles Frieza's when he was in his third form. Finally, after absorbing
Android 18, he became Perfect Cell (which you see in the picture), who more closely resembles a human but still retains the
odd winglike objects on his back. His tail is what allows him to absorb energy from a
being. He doesn't just have stolen abilities, either. He can actually create little
Cells, called Cell Jrs that come out of his back and are very powerful.
Cell's power was practically unmatched...until Gohan went
SSJ2 (Super Saiyan 2) and defeated him with a massive kamehameha. Thus ended Cell's part in the
series, though he does appear again with all the other villains in movie 12 but gets beaten.

Name: Chao-zu [Variations: Chaozu]
Gender: Male
Born/Resides: Earth/Earth
Race: Human
Family: Unknown
Words of Wisdom: "No way, I didn't train this hard for nothing - I'm coming!"
|
Summary:
A young prince who appears in DragonBall,
Chao-zu is a small, white individual who possesses great telepathic powers, being able to
communicate with his mind over long distances, as well as physically affect opponents. To
you you the truth, I would say that he looks like a mime. At his entrance, he is comparable in
power to his peers, but, as his power does not increase greatly with training, he falls behind
and is left in the background. He is a good-natured individual who cares deeply for his
friends and would sacrifice everything for them. This is proven in DragonBall Z when he
sttempts to defeat Nappa with a self-destruct. His best friend is Tien, and they are
often in each other's company, with the exception of on the battlefield during the latter
part of the series.

|
|
Name: Frieza [Variations: Freeza]
Gender: Male
Born/Resides: Unknown/Deceased
Race: Changeling
Family: King Kold [Father], Cooler [Brother]
Words of Wisdom: "Go ahead, whatever turns you on big boy!"
|
Summary:
A power-hungry villain, Frieza, was
a powerful, cruel, and dangerous being who appeared as the second main villain in DragonBall Z (after Vegeta).
At his appearance, he had already amassed a vast empire stretching across the stars, and a long trail
of tears and blood lay in his wake. He was the individual who the Saiyans worked for as
planet brokers, and who eventually destroyed them due to a hidden fear that one may rise that
would achieve the power of a Super Saiyan and destroy him. During his stint in the series, he
is on Namek with his men searching for the DragonBalls to wish for eternal life. However, his
plan is foiled by the arrival of first Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma, and later, Vegeta, Piccolo, and
Goku. The end, everything boils down to a final faceoff on Namek between a Super Saiyan Goku and
Frieza. Frieza is cut to
pieces by his own kienzan attacks, and then further damaged by Goku's parting blast. His
body was later found by his father and repaired, and they travel to Earth to take revenge, but
instead both meet their end at the hands of Mirai (Future) Trunks.
Frieza is another one of those characters who
can change form to dramatically increase their power level. In his first form, he is a short, purple, pink, and
white creature with horns sticking straight out of his head. His second form is much larger, preserving the same
three colors, with the horns now resembling those of a bull. His third form is a
fiendish-looking lizard creature with a head extending to the back the length of the body, still
purple, pink, and white.
His final form, a diminuitive purple and white creature, in fact looks the weakest, but is definitely not.
After he powers up to his full power, this form will become very large and bulky with the tremendous
addition of his whole power. In each of these forms, he has an extendable tail that can be
used to devastating effect during a battle.

Name: Gohan [Variations: Son Gohan, A.K.A. The Great Saiyanman]
Gender: Male
Born/Resides: Earth/Earth
Race: Half-Saiyan/Half-Human
Family: Goku [Father], Chi-Chi [Mother], Goten [Brother], Videl [Wife], Pan [Daughter], Mr. Satan [Father-in-law], Old Son Gohan [Grandfather]
Words of Wisdom: Bulma: Gohan, this is crazy!
Gohan:No, this is life!
|
Summary:
Gohan is Goku's first son and so
has incredible power. A large part of it is usually hidden until some great anger within him
causes it to come out. However, he does manage to surpass his own father one or two times during the
series. During his childhood, Gohan was constantly pushed by his mother Chi-Chi to study, and
so rarely underwent any really intensive training for long periods of time. Despite this, he
was still stronger than all of the humans. He was an important character in the series almost
from his first appearance. He saved his father and Piccolo both against Raditz and Garlic Jr.
Interestingly, he also played a large role in transforming Piccolo from a power-hungry villain
to one of the good guys. Piccolo himself also had a great influence on Gohan's life.
His influence on Gohan was so deep, in fact, that Gohan sometimes actually dressed like Piccolo.
Gohan also became good friends with Krillen, and they buddied around together throughout the series.
Gohan was also the first character to go Super Saiyan 2. This occurred during the Cell Game when he was
pushed over the edge by the sight of all of his friends being hurt by Cell and the Cell Jrs.
His transformation allowed him to defeat Cell and remove his evil from the Earth for good.
Gohan met his wife, Videl Satan, while attending
Orange Star High School. While he was there, an idea occurred to him to dress up like a
super hero and go around beating up criminals in Satan City. Thus was the arrival of
the Great Saiyanman. Videl found out his real identity somehow and this started off a
relationship that eventually led to their marriage and a child named Pan. It is also interesting
to note that Videl was the daughter of Mr. Satan, the wrestler who was continually taking credit
for the Z Fighters' achievements later on in the series.

|
Name: Goku [Variations: Son Goku/Gokou, Kakarot/Kakarotto]
Gender: Male
Born/Resides: Planet Vegeta/Earth
Race: Saiyan
Family: Bardock [Father], Raditz [Brother], Chi-Chi [Wife], Gohan [Son], Goten [Son], Videl [Daughter-in-law], Pan [Granddaughter], Old Son Gohan [Father], Mr. Satan [Brother-in-law]
Words of Wisdom: "Ahhh!!! A needle! I hate needles! Get me outta here!!!"
|
Summary:
The central character in the entire
series, Goku is a Saiyan who was originally sent to Earth to destroy its population and prepare
it for sale (the Saiyans were somewhat of a race of planet brokers working for Frieza).
However, he is found by the Old Son Gohan in his spacepod and taken home to be taken care of.
One day, he fell from Old Son Gohan's back into a ravine, suffering a head injury that erased his
Saiyan heritage from his memory and turned him into a caring little boy. One fateful night, he
looked at the full moon, and turned Oozaru, destroying the martial arts stadium and stepping on his
grandfather. The dying Son Gohan tells him never to look the full moon again, but
his Saiyan heritage would continue to haunt him in the future.
It was as this boy that
Goku makes his debut in the very first episode as a hilariously innocent little boy who
is found by Bulma when she hits him with her car. As time passes, he matures into one of the
best fighters in the universe, as well as the most powerful, but at the same time he retains a
heart pure as crystal, always pulling through for his friends in a pinch. During the series,
he also manages to get married to a woman named Chi-Chi and have two sons: Gohan and Goten.
|
|
|
|
Name: Goten [Variations: Son Goten]
Gender: Male
Born/Resides: Earth/Earth
Race: Half-Saiyan/Half-Human
Family: Goku [Father], Chi-Chi [Mother], Gohan [Brother], Videl [Sister-in-law], Pan [Niece], Mr. Satan [Brother's Father-in-law], Old Son Gohan [Grandfather]
Words of Wisdom: "Trunks, what is biology?"
|
Summary:
The second son of Goku, Goten bears
a very strong resemblance to him and wears a smaller version of his karate uniform. He first
made his appearance during the Buu Saga while his father was in the other dimension, exhibiting a
great amount of power by attaining the level of Super Saiyan at age seven. His best friend is
Trunks, and they always buddy around together, often fooling around and getting in trouble for it.
He and Trunks can also fuse to form Gotenks, the only character other than Goku to attain the
level of Super Saiyan 3.

|
|
Name: Krillen [Variations: Krillin, Kuririn]
Gender: Male
Born/Resides: Earth/Earth
Race: Human
Family: Android 18 [Wife], Marron [Daughter]
Words of Wisdom: "Sometimes I wonder why I never became a shoe salesman."
|
Summary:
Krillen is a good-natured character in the series and Goku's best friend. He is one year older than Goku, and is probably the strongest human. He started out as a normal character, but was slowly overshadowed by his Saiyan counterparts.
He is a well-rounded character, always there when his friends need him. After Gohan was born, they
started buddying around together, so Krillen ended up being best friend to both father and son.
His trademark attack
is the Kienzan, or Destructo Disc, which has the ability to cut through any warrior, no what his/her
strength is, if they are not careful. Many people also think that Krillen is naturally bald,
but that is not true. He is a Buddhist monk, and shaves his head by choice (Android 18 eventually convinced him
to grow some hair). That is
also why he has the six dots on his forehead. As for why he has no nose; I have no idea.
Even though he is a good fighter and
one of the strongest if not the strongest human in the series, he is continually used for comic
relief during the series, although still picking up significant roles here and there. His luck with women was also pretty bad until he met
Android 18. He marries her, and they end up having a child named Marron. Ironically,
Marron was the name of the girlfriend that he had before Android 18.

|
Name: Piccolo [Variations: PiccoloNail, Kamicolo]
Gender: Nameks have no gender
Born/Resides: Namek/Earth
Race: Namek
Family: Kattatsu [Original Father], Kami [Other Half], Piccolo Daimao [Father], Member of the Dragon Family
Words of Wisdom: "Oh, I thought that was your face."
|
Summary:
Piccolo probably has the most
intruiging histories of all the DragonBall characters. He started out as one person who travelled
to earth to escape the great storm on Namek, but then split in two because he wanted to become
the guardian of the Earth, who needs a pure heart. The two halves were pure good (Kami) and
pure evil (Piccolo Daimao). They fought for supremacy, but it ended in a stalemate.
Then Goku came along and killed Piccolo Daimao by flying right through him. To preserve
himself, Piccolo Daimao spit out an egg with some of his essence in it. This hatched to
become Piccolo. The new Piccolo still had hatred in his heart, and the greatest of it was
pointed at Goku, who had killed his predecessor. They fought often, but Goku usually came
out on top. As the series progresses, we are able to watch Piccolo develop from a vengeful
Namek with designs to take over the world into a well-rounded individual. His mergers with
Nail and also with Kami (his "good" half) helped this process greatly.
Evidence of that was shown throughout
the series, beginning with his watching over Gohan, which helped him open up a great deal.
He stops being arrogant and becomes pretty much a member of the Z team. He also had a tremendous
influence on Gohan, who ended up practically idolizing him but also learned a great deal from him as well.
However, he does keep
his reclusive personality. He also keeps up with the Saiyans as they go Super Saiyan,
which is a large feat in itself. He is also one of the smartest characters in the series, if
not the smartest. He fights with a lot of deduction and planning, instead of rushing head-on
and winging it like most of the others. This allows him to be a very dangerous opponent to
be up against.

|
Name: Tien [Variations: Tenshinhan]
Gender: Male
Born/Resides: Earth/Earth
Race: Human
Family: Unknown
Words of Wisdom: "I may be just a hole in the road to you, but it's gonna be one heck of a big one!"
|
Summary:
His proper name is Tenshinhan, and
he is the chief bodyguard and best friend of the little prince and fighter Chao-zu. A fighter of
great power for a human, he has a number of techniques which allow him to attack from many
directions at once by splitting into parts. For some reason, he has three eyes instead
of simply two.
In manner, he is somewhat of a toned-down Piccolo. Although possibly with less wisdom and
forethought, he does carry a quiet confident, and serious persona, which can be seen during the
series. He plays a good-sized role in the series before eventually being overshadowed by the
Saiyans along with the rest of the humans.

|
Name: Trunks [Variations: Mirai (Future) Trunks, Chibi (Little) Trunks, Teen Trunks]
Gender: Male
Born/Resides: Earth/Earth
Race: Half-Saiyan/Half-Human
Family: Vegeta [Father], Bulma [Mother], Bra [Sister], Dr. Briefs [Grandfather], Mrs. Briefs [Mother], King Vegeta [Grandfather]
Words of Wisdom: "So you want to see my sword, eh?"
|
Summary:
Trunks first appears in the series
towards the end of the Frieza Saga as 18-year-old Mirai Trunks, or Teen/Future Trunks from twenty years in the
future. He came to warn Earth's fighters of the arrival of the androids, but also ended up killing
the robot Frieza and King Kold. The only person that he
revealed his identity to was Goku, for he was afraid that if Vegeta found out the he was his son,
Vegeta would not get married to Bulma and he would cease to exist. His identity was later revealed after
Chibi Trunks was born. He also gives Goku some heart
medicine that will later save his life and allow him to join in the battle agsinst the androids. At the time, Trunks has reached the level of Super Saiyan, which
gives him the distinction of being the second character to reach Super Saiyan in the series (that
is not entirely true, however, because he comes from 20 years later, and by then many of the
Saiyans have attained that level). He carries a large sword made of a very durable alloy (the sword came from Taipon, a character from Movie 13) and
is a fairly good fighter with or without it. Mirai Trunks returns from the future a second time
to aid in fighting the androids and hopefully change his future - to that end he is successful.
He returned one last time for the battle against Buu, and then leaves for good.
About two years after Mirai Trunks first
shows up, Chibi Trunks is born in present time as a small, slightly chubby baby. He will later
grow up during DragonBall Z with Gohan as an influential figure in his life and with Goten as
one of his best friends. They both get into trouble a lot becuase they constantly
fool around, but nothing serious ever happens because of it. Trunks first reaches the level of Super Saiyan as an
eight-year-old, but that was as far as he got. He and Goten eventually learn the fusion dance and during battles
sometimes appear as Gotenks.
Unlike his father, the blunt and
sometimes harsh Vegeta who always hides his feelings, Trunks has a kind heart and a friendly
attitude, a side of his character he does not mind showing. He loves both his parents, but
Vegeta was so used to keeping people at a difference that Trunks barely had a chance to find out
that Vegeta really did care for his son.

|
|
|
Name: Vegeta [Variations: Prince Vegeta, Vegita, Vejita]
Gender: Male
Born/Resides: Planet Vegeta/Earth
Race: Saiyan
Family: King Vegeta [Father], Bulma [Wife], Trunks [Son], Bra [Daughter], Dr. Briefs [Father-in-law], Mrs. Briefs [Mother-in-law]
Words of Wisdom: "Bad boys! Shame on you!"
|
Summary:
Vegeta is probably most memorable
for his huge ego and his characteristic way of taunting opponents before finishing them off.
Nevertheless, he is one of the most popular characters in the series, and my favorite, also.
He was born on Planet Vegeta as a Prince and as the son of King Vegeta, then the most powerful
Saiyan. He grew up learning from his father and sharing a fairly close bond with him considering
Vegeta's closed personality. He was kidnapped by Frieza and part of the reason why
King Vegeta initiated the rebellion that almost destroyed the Saiyan race.
He first appeared
in the series with Nappa attempting to take over the Earth, but was thwarted by the Z Fighters - including Goku.
The rest of his life is gradually revealed to us as the series progresses.
Vegeta is a skilled
fighter, but a little too focused on being, as he said, "The most powerful being in the universe!"
He spends the majority of DragonBallZ trying to surpass Goku, but also changing from an evil person
to a good guy. At the end, he finally realizes that the side of good is the one he should be on, and moves himself eomplelely over that way.
Throughout all this, Vegeta starts up
a family also, with Bulma. They have two children - Trunks, the older Brother, and Bra, the younger daughter.
Because of Vegeta's hardened personality, he never shows much affection for any of his family,
but at heart he really did care for them very much. He has a number of good qualities, among them
his incredible drive to achieve when he really wants to and his pride, which helps him a lot
when he's up against a tough opponent. However, he has a fiery temper that can flare up
in a moment's notice and an ego that gets him in trouble fairly often.
So, in conclusion, Vegeta plays
one of the more important parts in the series and adds his own unique dimension to it.
Finally, even though he has a personality somewhat tilted towards
domineering, most of us like him anyway. ^_^

|
Name: Yamcha [Variations: None]
Gender: Male
Born/Resides: Earth/Earth
Race: Human
Family: Unknown
Words of Wisdom: "Goku taught me that one!"
|
Summary:
A desert bandit whom Goku meets while
on his travels during the original DragonBall, Yamcha befriends him after losing to him in a fight, and
also maintains a relationship with Bulma until halfway through DragonBall Z. His fighting
abilities are not too bad, but due to the fact that he was a human and so had lesser increases in
power than the Saiyans, he eventually fell behind and faded into the background. However, he
has an inherent ability to direct his energy blasts anywhere that he may wish, and he uses this
to great effect on unsuspecting opponents. Yamcha is also constantly in need of cash, and
throughout the series is constantly trying to find ways to make money, even becoming a baseball
player for a short period of time. However, he usually ends up spending most or all of what
he earns. His good friend is the shape-shifting cat Puar, who is his constant companion
off the battlefield.
